Daniel Defoe Maximum
Daniel Defoe is a famous English writer of the eighteenth century. D. Defoe wrote his well-known novel “The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe” in 1719. when he was nearly 60 years old.
The novel is an exciting and remarkable story about an Englishman who was shipwrecked on an uninhabited island for 28 years.
The story starts with a young Robinson Crusoe running away from home and becoming a sailor. He manages to trade successfully on his first voyage. On his second voyage, his ship is attacked by Turkish pirates and he becomes a slave. He manages to escape and becomes a farmer in Brazil.
After farming for some time, Crusoe sets sail for Guinea. However, his ship is destroyed in a violent storm and Crusoe is the only survivor.
Overcoming his despair, Robinson fetches arms, tools, and other supplies from the ship before it breaks apart and sinks.
Crusoe lives alone on a desert island. He creates a comfortable life there. He builds a fenced-in habitat near a cave which he excavates.
By making marks in a wooden cross, he creates a calendar.
Robinson learns how to fish, to hunt and to grow plants. He gets food and shelter by using trees and plants on the island.
Crusoe grows barley and rice, dries grapes to make raisins, learns to make pottery, and raises goats.
Crusoe reads the Bible and becomes religious, thanking God for his fate in which nothing is missing but human society.
Robinson also adopts a small parrot.
Robinson Crusoe and Friday One day Robinson meets a young man. Crusoe names him Friday because he finds him on that day of the week.
Crusoe and Friday become friends. They learn to respect and trust each other. For several years the two live happily.
One day a boat with pirates comes to the island. Crusoe saves the captain of the ship and returns with him to England.
The novel is praise to human labour and the triumph of man over nature.
When the book was published in 1719, it immediately became popular. Defoe made his story so realistic that everyone believed it.
