“Robinson Crusoe” (1719) The main idea: the life of Robinson Crusoe. His parents want him to become a lawyer but Crusoe is determined to become a sailor. Crusoe overcomes great obstacles in his life to survive. Main themes: Courage and Determination, Importance of Hard Work, Friendship and Loyalty , Relationship with Nature, Gratitude, Power and Control, Faith in God, Good versus Evil
Adventures of Robinson Crusoe sets sail from the Queen's Dock in Hull on a sea voyage, against the wishes of his parents. After a long journey his ship is wrecked in a storm. His lust for the sea remains so strong that he sets out to sea again. This journey, too, ends in disaster as the ship is taken over by the pirates. Crusoe was captive but later he was rescued and taken to Brazil. Robinson’s 3 rd adventure ended with a shipwreck and he appeared on an inhabitant island of South America. He began struggle for his survival. He lived on that island for 28 years and 2 month.
He salvages useful items from the sinking ship, makes a canoe and safe shelters for himself, and hunt for food. He creates a comfortable life for himself and is able to survive on the island for twenty-eight years. He uses things from Nature which can help him to survive. He rescues the man from cannibals and teaches him to eat animal flesh, speak English and shares his religious beliefs. He reads the Bible and becomes religious, thanking God for his fate in which nothing is missing but human society. Robinson’s life on the island
Friday — the rescued man • During his twenty-fifth year on the island, Robinson manages to save a savage from a group of cannibals who land on the island. This man is so grateful that he wants to be Crusoe’s slave. • Friday becomes Crusoe’s faithful companion and friend. • • Later Robinson and Friday saved Friday’s father. After 35 years Crusoe returned to England where Friday accompanied him.
