Dan. 7: 17 “These great beasts, which are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. ” Ø Who were these four kings identified with their empires? ØNebuchadnezzar, Cyrus, Alexander, Julius Caesar
Daniel 7: 1 In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters. 2 Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. Ø Both scripture (“after thee shall arise …” Dan 2: 39) and history show these kingdoms follow each other. Ø Daniel 2: 35 shows at the time of the end this beast is a composite beast “broken to pieces together” and therefore is together at the time together” of the end. Ø Composite also from Rev. 17: 3 plus “ 7 heads”. Rev. 17: 3 … and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having 7 heads & 10 horns
As seen by man As seen by God
This THEME is where God shows the Kingdoms of Man are temporary in contrast to His kingdom which is forever. • Nebuchadnezzar was unsatisfied and went about to show his kingdom was eternal. He however found out God rules in the kingdoms of men and it is His kingdom which is eternal. • Daniel 2: 44 And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.
Daniel 7: 4 The first was like a lion, and had eagle's wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man's heart was given to it. Ø (“wings”) Jer. 50: 17 Israel is a scattered sheep; the lions have driven him away: first the king of Assyria hath devoured him; and last this Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon hath broken his bones. Ø (“a man’s heart”) Experiences of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4: 33 -37 including becoming insane beast and restored having learned God rules in the kingdoms of men.
Ø Daniel 7: 5 And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh. Ø “Raised up on one side…” üThe Persians ultimately dominated! Ø “Three Ribs” üThree presidents, Dan. 6: 2 Ø “Devour much flesh” üPracticed expansionist policy!
Daniel 7: 6 After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. Ø “Four Wings” = Swift movement - Stunning Victories, four generals! Ø“Four Heads” = Empire divided into 4 parts after Alexander’s death.
For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Matthew 16: 26 Hint
The Roman Empire Daniel 7: 7 After this I saw in the night visions (Dark Ages and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. Ø “Iron” connects to the Iron legs of the image Ø “devoured” and “stamped” = ruthless to its enemies Ø “diverse” = no likeness in nature, constitution, religion Ø “Ten horns” – identifies + echo to the ten toes of the image!
Daniel 7: 8 I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. l “Little” in military power of its leader. l = 3 kingdoms: (1)Exarchate of Ravenna, (2)Kingdom of the Lombards, (3)State of Rome -- all plucked up by Pepin (758 AD) and given to the pope. l This is seen in the triple crown warn by the pope. l The “Holy See” (priests) give it eyes which see The throughout the world. l The “mouth” = Papal bulls, 2 Thes 2: 4 The
When did the little horn lose its power to “wear out the saints”? Daniel 7: 25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time (360)and times (360+360) and the dividing of time (360/2=180). (360+720+180=1260) – Given power by the decree of Phocas to persecute in 606 A. D. and lost it 1260 years later by Napoleon and Garibaldi.
American Catholic Quarterly Review, April, 1911 “Long ages ago, when Rome through the neglect of the Western emperors was left to the mercy of the barbarous hordes, the Romans turned to one figure for aid and protection. and asked him to rule them. . and thus. . commenced the temporal sovereignty of the popes. And meekly stepping to the throne of Caesar, the vicar of Christ took up the sceptre to which the emperors and kings of Europe were to bow in reverence through so many ages. ”
Who is the “Ancient of Days” Daniel 7: 9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. n Daniel 7: 13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. n Daniel 7: 22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. n n God manifestation. This title depends on the context as to who it applies. (V. 9 = Christ), (v. 13 = God), (v. 22 Christ - Jn. 5: 22 judgment given by Christ). (See Exodus 23: 20 -21; Gen. 18) Ancient of days – title literally fits Jesus – (2016 -33)x 365 = 723, 795 days. That’s by far more days then any other human.
Daniel 7: 10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. Ø Ø Ø Luke 11: 32 The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here. Revelation 21: 8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death. Bible prophecy is full of signs and symbols and therefore numbers act as symbols and don’t need to be literal. John 12: 48 & 1 Pet. 4: 2 -5 clearly show those who know the revealed will of God and have been called upon to submit to it, will be judged. Psa. 49: 12 says those who do not understand as the beast that perish. 100 million isn’t universal resurrection!
Daniel 7: 11 -12 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. 12 As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. • “Season” = 90 yrs. “Time” = 360 yrs. Together = 450 years = time nations last into Millennial Age. – Day = year (Num 14: 34; Eze. 4: 4 -6; Lk. 13: 32) • Revelation 19: 20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Daniel 7: 13 I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man (Jesus) came with the clouds of heaven (angels), and came to the Ancient of days (God), and they (angels) brought him near before him. 14 And there was given him (Jesus) dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. l Described is the long dark Gentile night for this vision starts back when Jesus goes to heaven and the long night continued through v. 25 (1260 yrs) plus “unto the end” V. 26. when Jesus’ returns. Daniel 7: 27 And the kingdom … shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
What helps link this vision in Dan. 8: 1 with chapter 7: 1? Daniel 8: 1 In the third year of the reign of king Belshazzar a vision appeared unto me, even unto me Daniel, after that which appeared unto me at the first. ► Similar words in Dan. 7: 1 “in the first year of Belshazzar” & the phrase “appeared unto me at the first” help tie the visions together. ► Context: Belshazzar was appointed co-regent in the 3 rd year of the reign of Nabonidus, approximately B. C. 533. Babylon fell in 539 B. C.
How do we know the Ram represents the Medo-Persian Empire? Daniel 8: 3 -4 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and saw, and, behold, there stood before the river a ram which had two horns: and the two horns were high; but one was higher than the other, and the higher came up last. I saw the ram pushing westward, and northward, and southward; so that no beasts might stand before him, neither was there any that could deliver out of his hand; but he did according to his will, and became great. vs. 20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia.
Daniel 8: 5 And as I was considering, behold, an he goat came from the west on the face of the whole earth, and touched not the ground: and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes. • vs. 21 -22 And the rough goat is the king (NKJV = kingdom) of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. • “great horn” = Alexander the Great (Answer) Because the “little horn” in Daniel 7 isn’t the “little horn” in Daniel 8 and to correctly interpret is important.
• Dan. 8: 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land (Israel). – “Little” as compared to the power of Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus and Alexander. The power of Rome at this period in history was in its Senate & Assembly. – “South” – “In 295 BC, Rome began a war with a tough Latin people … The result of this war, in 280 BC, was total Roman control over all of central Italy. Rome then turned its eyes south …” Richard Hooker 1996. • This began the Punic Wars with Carthage. – “East” “When, after the death of Seleucus 1 in 280 B. C. , the Seleucid grip on Asia Minor slackened …” (Ency. Britannica, vol. 2, p. 727, 68 ed. ). • This allowed the Roman power to fill the vacuum and then to conquer the remaining generals over the Grecian empire.
Daniel 8: 10 And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven (faithful); and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them [11] Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, (Jesus) and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down (A. D. 70). The time period was 300 years later and Rome’s real power was no longer divided by senators but in its emperor. The sanctuary was cast down in AD 70
Daniel 8: 13 Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? 14 And he said unto me, Unto two thousand three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed. n The vision begins with the “little horn” (Rome) when it began to move “south and east“ (v. 9) about 275 BC.
Daniel 8: 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the “south”, and toward the east … • “South” – (Richard Hooker 1996) “In 295 BC, Rome began a war with a tough Latin people … The result of this war, in 280 BC, was total Roman control over all of central Italy. Rome then turned its eyes south …”. (Italian south peninsula controlling it by 275 BC) • “South” – “Rome first began to make war outside the Italian peninsula during the Punic wars (274 -148 BC) against Carthage. ”
Daniel 8: 9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east … • “East” after the death of Seleucus 1 in 280 BC, the Seleucid grip on Asia Minor slackened, ” (Ency. Britannica, vol. 2, p. 727, 68 ed. ) opening up for Rome to move east. • “East” In 275 BC, Pyrrhus, ruler of Epirus met the BC Epirus Roman army at the Battle of Beneventum and even though the battle was indecisive it would have a great effect on Rome becoming the dominant military powers of the Mediterranean and further showed that the Greek kingdoms were incapable of defending their colonies. • “This suggests the sanctuary will be cleansed (v. 13) 2300 years after Rome moved South and East, Dan. 8: 14. (2300 – 275 -1 = 2026 AD). AD • Dan. 12: 12 supports the daily sacrifice begins in 2026 AD

• Daniel 8: 23 And in the latter time (break in time) of their kingdom, (v. 9 = Rome) when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce (<5794 “az”Deu. 28: 50) countenance, and understanding dark sentences, (Dan 7: 24, 25) shall stand up. [24] And his power shall be mighty, (Papal “little horn”) but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people (faithful). – History with v. 24 confirms this king is the Papal little horn. “but not by his own power”
• Pope Boniface III sought and obtained a decree from Emperor Phocas in 606 AD which restated that "the See of Blessed Peter the Apostle should be the head of all the Churches". This ensured that the title of "Universal Bishop" belonged exclusively to the Bishop of Rome, and effectively ended the attempt by Cyriacus, Bishop of Constantinople, to establish himself as "Universal Bishop". • Two years later a pillar was erected to honour Phocas with the inscription: “Pro innumerabilibus Pietatis ejus beneficiis, et pro quiete procurata, ad conservata lebertate. ” • “Not by his own power” continued through the Holy Roman Empire.
Daniel 8: 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; (Christ and saints) but he shall be broken without hand. (RSV “human hand”) l 2 Thessalonians 2: 8 … whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
• Daniel 8: 26 And the vision of the evening (Gentile night) and the morning (Zion’s glad morning) which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days (2300 years!). • 27 And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it.
Attention turns to the “Little Horn” What we learn about the horn in Daniel 7 ØPlucked up three horns of 4 th Beast ØHad eyes like a man ØHad a mouth speaking “great things” §Spoke words against the Most High ØDestroyed with 4 th beast by Christ ØHad a “stout look” ØMade war with the saints ØPrevailed and wore them out ØChanged times and laws ØHad power for 1260 days The Holy See
Daniel 12: 11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination (Dome of the Rock) that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. (=1290 years) [12] Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days (= 1335 years). • Jerusalem captured by Nebuchadnezzar and it is thought in 598 BC the daily sacrifice was done away. • In 691 AD the Dome of the Rock was erected by Abd. Almalik which was 1290 years after 598 BC. (1290 -598 -1 = 691) • 1335 years from 691 AD = 2026 AD when the daily sacrifice will be re-instituted after Ezekiel’s temple is built. • 2026 -7 = 2019 – 10 = 2009 AD! • At least two big assumptions namely: 7 years to build Ezekiel’s temple and the daily sacrifice as after and not before this temple is built. (1 Kings 6: 38; Ezra 3: 4, 6)
Seeing the Whole Picture Although the image of Daniel 2 was a "composite" image of parts, we are to understand it as a "whole" - representing the Kingdom of Men! (Dan. 2: 35 ALL destroyed “together” by the Stone power) Likewise, the Beasts of Daniel 7 are not just to be understood individually, but collectively too. That is to say, the 4 beasts form a composite beast representing a latter day "kingdom" or "empire" or "power". (Rev. 13: 2) So also, the Ram and the He Goat (domestic animals in Dan. 8) show this transformation or development of "Man’s Kingdom”. from wild beast to controlled animals. This connection is seen in the "little horn" power described in chapters 7 & 8. In the latter days ALL of these beasts give there power to the seven head beast ridden by the Little Horn, (Rev. 17: 13).
Revelation 17: 3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
A comparison of Beasts Bear (wild animal) = Ram (domestic animal) Leopard (wild animal) = He Goat (domestic animal) üThe Bear & The Ram Ø"raised up on one side" = "one horn higher than other" Ø"devour much flesh" = "pushed in many directions" üThe Leopard & The He-Goat Ø"Four Wings" = "Touched not the ground" Ø"Four Heads" = "Four Horns" üWhy no 4 th beast equivalent in Chapter 8? ØOne of 4 horns of the He goat (out of which the "little horn" grew) = 4 th beast = Rome ØFocus switches to horns, especially the "little one"!
When is the sanctuary cleansed from the “abomination that maketh desolate”? DAN 12: 11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away (598 BC), and the abomination that maketh desolate set up (691 AD), shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days. – (598 BC – 1290) = 692 AD -1 = 691 AD. v. 12 Blessed is he that waiteth, and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days. – “He that waiteth” is when the 3 rd temple has been set up replacing the “abomination that maketh desolate”. This will be 1335 day-years after the Dome of the Rock was built. – 691 AD + 1335 = 2026 AD and those like Daniel will be blessed to see the daily sacrifice reinstituted. – Solomon’s temple was 7 years in building. (2026 – 7) = 2019 A. D. The sanctuary is cleansed with the earthquake in Zech. 14. Jesus is thought to return as a thief ten years before.
