Cyprus - officially the Republic of Cyprus , is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, east of Greece, south of Turkey, west of Syria, Lebanon, northwest of Israel and north of Egypt. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and the Republic of Cyprus is a member state of the European Union. The country has two official languages: Greek and Turkish.
The Republic of Cyprus is divided into six districts: Nicosia, Famagusta, Kyrenia, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos.
Cyprus is the third most populous island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of its most popular tourist destinations
Cyprus Major Cities Nicosia (around 200, 000 population) lies at the center of Cyprus, no more than one and a half hours from any mountain or coastal resort. As the administrative center and the seat of Government, the city is dotted with the various ministries and diplomatic missions.
Limassol (around 170, 000 population) - on the south coast of Cyprus, is the country's second largest city. With its modern Cyprus properties, villas, apartments, shops and restaurants, high standard of medical services and reputable schools, Limassol offers its visitors and residents a high standard of living. And there's no shortage of culture in this south coast town with its museums, castles, theaters and galleries. Within easy reach are some of the island's most celebrated historical monuments.
Larnaca (around 80, 000 population) - the graceful row of majestic palms. Nowadays Larnaca is a thriving modern seaside town with excellent Cyprus property, villa, apartment, shops and restaurants, several museums, a large harbour, a cosmopolitan yacht marina with 200 berths and a number of luxury hotels on the golden sands stretching away to the east. It is also the home of the island’s main international airport.
Paphos / Pafos (around 60, 000 population) - the mild, healthy climate and beautiful countryside surrounding this south-western coastal town have attracted visitors to Paphos throughout history. Legend has it that the Goddess Aphrodite was born in its warm, translucent waters. The special colors of the Pafos landscape, lush scenery and a magical coastline give the area a unique charm of its own. Admirably suitable for sports, recreation and relaxing lifestyle, the west coast enjoys long summers, mild winters and sensational beauty in springtime.
Cuisine • • • Seafood and fish dishes of Cyprus include squid, octopus, red mullet, and sea bass. Cucumber and tomato are used widely in salads. Common vegetable preparations include potatoes in olive oil and parsley, pickled cauliflower and beets, asparagus and Taro. Other traditional delicacies of the island are meat marinated in dried coriander, seeds and wine, and eventually dried and smoked, such as lountza, charcoal-grilled lamb, souvlaki (pork and chicken cooked over charcoal), and sheftalia (minced meat wrapped in mesentery). Pourgouri (bulgur, cracked wheat) is the traditional carbohydrate other than bread, and is used to make the Cypriot delicacy koubes. Fresh vegetables and fruits are common ingredients in Cypriot cuisine. Frequently used vegetables include courgettes, green peppers, okra, green beans, artichokes, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and grape leaves, and pulses such as beans, broad beans, peas, black-eyed beans, chick-peas andlentils. The commonest among fruits and nuts are pears, apples, grapes, oranges, mandarines, nectarines, mespila, blackberries, cherry, strawberries, figs, watermelon, avocado, lemon, pistachio, almond, chestnut, walnut, hazelnut. Cyprus is also well known for its desserts, including lokum (also known as Turkish Delight) and Soutzoukos.
CULTURE AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR Cypriots are little more reserved initially in friendship than Americans and most Europeans, but tend to become closer friends once friendships do develop. Overall, Cypriots are extremely hospitable. Cypriots speak more loudly and with more hand facial gestures than western Europeans. A friendly discussion may look like an argument to the outsider. Among friends (male-female, female-female), a kiss on each cheek is a common greeting; otherwise a handshake will do. Men do not typically kiss, unless they are old friends. Young female friends will sometimes hold hands. Cypriots are quite trendy when it comes to clothing. Styles are similar to the US or Europe, but probably a bit dressier. Even for the younger generations, a typical going-out outfit definitely would not involve shorts and sandals. Binge drinking is not part of Cypriot culture, and losing control in public is not viewed as desirable. Musical taste in Cyprus tends toward a blended mix of Euro-pop, techno, American hip-hop and Greek music. Developing a taste or at least a tolerance for Greek music will definitely help you improve your experience on the island.
