Nicosia, the “Rally City” For the ERC Cyprus Rally 2016 Nicosia (Lefkosia), the capital of Cyprus since the 11 th century, lies roughly in the centre of the island. A fine blend of old building and modern architecture presents a cosmopolitan city with excellent conference facilities alongside a wealth of historical monuments. Nicosia is the most important cultural centre of the island is located 49 km from Larnaca International Airport and 146 km from Pafos International Airport. It is also the home of the President of the Republic, the Archbishop, the foreign Embassies and Consulates, the Heads of the Government, and the Head Offices of banks and other major businesses. There are two distinct parts: the old town within the medieval walls and the new town outside the walls. The walls of Nicosia, which enclose the old part of the capital, were constructed by the Venetians and subsequently strengthened by eleven bastions. A birds-eye view of the circular wall features in the city’s official emblem. Among the city’s main attractions, “Laiki Yeitonia” is a revived stone-paved square, where the atmosphere of old city has been recreated. Charming winding alleys with traditional houses, shops, restaurants and galleries all lovingly restored as typical examples of Cypriot urban architecture of a bygone, more graceful age.
