Current status of the Science Data and Distribution Center (SDDC) H. T. Su, Alfred Chen, P. W. Kao and J. L. Chern ISUAL SDDC, Physics Department, NCKU, Taiwan • • • Human resource Security system Electricity Network Computer environment and architectures Image processing and visualization software Computation Cluster Output facilities Backup policy Planned tasks for 2001/10/~ 2002/08 SDDC-ISUAL 1
Human resource of SDDC • One postdoc. (shares with science team) – Dr. Alfred Bing-Chih Chen • Two software engineers (one shares with science team) – Ms. Pei-Wen Kao – Mr. Chan-Kao Chang (leaving in July for compulsory military service) • 5 undergraduate students SDDC-ISUAL 2
Security system – Doors: 3 areas (Data Center, Terminal room, Main computer room) are under the protection of finger prints security system. – Break-in detector will be installed in this summer. – Safety facilities including emergency lights, flash lights, fire extinguishers. SDDC-ISUAL 3
Electricity • A new 50 KVA UPS will installed in the next month to meet the growing electricity demand of SDDC-ISUAL 4
Network • 3 sets of 24 -ports highperformance switches were installed to form the backbone to the internet and the intranet. • A Linux system was setup as the fire wall to screen direct data access from internet. SDDC-ISUAL 5
Computation environment • We have successfully migrated the whole traditional workstation/Unix system to the PC based/Linux environment. • Advantage: – Economy – Efficiency – High reliability – Easy maintenance SDDC-ISUAL 6
Computer architecture 3 -Tiered architecture – Browser – WWW Server • Apache Server + Front. Page 2002 server extension + PHP – Database Server • My. SQL Server + Raid 5 disk array • DB Server will be purchased and installed in Q 4, 2001 SDDC-ISUAL 7
Backup Policy • Goal : to maximize the safety of the upcoming ISUAL data. – Disk Array : on-line backup to avoid the single disk failure – Disk Mirroring : Automatic daily mirroring from disk raid to IDE disks to avoid the accidentally deletion of files. – Tape backup : weekly backup by DAT 40 tapes to preserve the data. SDDC-ISUAL 8
Image processing and visualization software • IDL will be our standard image processing platform. • IDL with floating license both for Linux/Win 98/Win. NT has been purchased and installed. SDDC-ISUAL 9
Computation Clusters • A mini-cluster consisting of 4 PC/8 CPUs is up and running. • Beowolf environment based on Portland Group CDK, including Fortran 90, MPI, PVM are under testing. • This mini-cluster will be expanded after this miniconfiguration has been working stably. SDDC-ISUAL 10
Output facilities • 2 duplex, high-speed monochrome laser printer and 1 Tektronix color laser printer has been installed. • IEEE 1394 interface card and DV Cam are added for outputting animations and movie clips to video tapes. SDDC-ISUAL 11

Planned works for 2001/10 ~ 2002/08 • Simulations of data flows between NSPO and ISUAL/SDDC • Redundant links (x. DSL or leased line? ) to NSPO • Querying and retrieving dataset via WWW interface (will be ready by 2002/08) • Submission, review, approval, and executing status of the observation plans • Expanding the PC Cluster to meet the needs of the research work of science team SDDC-ISUAL 13
