Cryo. Net Team Meeting Aims and Expectations Wolfgang Schöner University of Graz, Department of Geography and Regional Research, Graz, Austria
AIMS for the meeting Cryo. Net Basics (Primer) List of Cryo. Net stations (criteria for site selection) WMO CG (June 2015)
ITEMS to discuss o Update on past meetings (Gino‘s and Barry‘s presentations) o Preparation for WMO Cg-2015 (site types concept, list of Cryo. Net stations for AG, agreed practices, …) o Planning for next meeting(s) o Making Cryo. Net operational
Cryo. Net activities so far o 1 st Cryo. Net WS (Nov. 2012, Vienna, Austria) o Questionaires o Cryosphere Station inventory o Primer to GCW Cryo. Net (draft) o 2 nd Cryo. Net WS (Dec. 2013, Beijing China) o Cryo. Net team meeting (Reykjavik, Island, Jan 2014) o Joint Cryo. Net and Portal team meeting (Davos, June 2014) o Questionaire at Website o South America Cryo. Net meeting (Santiago, Chile, Oct. 2014)

SITES vs. STATION o Station has 1 long, lat, elev (is a point) e. g. AWS o Site is either a point or a polygon with many long, lat, elev (glacier, ice cap, VAO, Sonnblick, Promice) o Should we differ between SITE and STATION? o There was confusion about the terminology (Miro, …. )
Example of Sonnblick

Cryo. Net sites must meet a minimum set of requirements: (extraction only, not full list!) 1. The site location is chosen such that, for the variables measured, it is spatially/temporally representative for measuring one or several components of the cryosphere. 2. Cryo. Net sites have to be active and perform sustained observations according to Cryo. Net agreed practices. 3. Technical personnel are trained in the operation of the equipment at the site. 4. For reference and integrated sites, there is an intent by the responsible agencies to long-term observations of at least one of the Cryo. Net variables. 1. The relevant Cryo. Net observations are of documented quality. The measurements are made and quality controlled according to Cryo. Net agreed practices.

Cryo. Net sites must meet a minimum set of requirements: 6. Associated standard meteorological in situ observations, when necessary for the accurate determination and interpretation of the GCW variables, are made with documented quality. 7. The data and metadata including changes in instrumentation, traceability, observation procedures are submitted to a data centre, which is interoperable with the GCW portal in a timely? manner. Metadata are also provided to the WMO Operational Information Resource (WIR) and maintained regularly. 6. The station characteristics and observational programme are kept up-to-date in the GCW station information database. 7. A station logbook for observations and activities that may affect observations is maintained and used in the data validation process. 7. User needs have been considered in the observation design process.
