COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT Output of language is the result of Comprehensible Input. 5
This is NOT Comprehensible Input! 6
COMPREHENSIBLE INPUT l The language acquirer understands the input. l CI is essential to language acquisition and literacy. l Comprehended input (intake) is what counts, not just input that is potentially comprehensible. l Comprehensible input should also contain language that has not yet be acquired but which the learner is ready to acquire (i + 1). l The more comprehensible input provided, the more language acquisition and literacy developed. 7
“It’s not how much L 2 you use … It’s how much L 2 they understand. ” De Mado 8

The ‘Instruction/ Acquisition Gap’ is narrowed… And the responsibility for remaining 90% in L 2 is shared between students and teacher. 22
RVI STRATEGY l Know when to intervene: l “Accuracy is a destination … Not a point of departure. ” … De Mado l “The conventions of language should not impede the invention of language. ” … Freeman & Freeman 23

MINIMIZING ENGLISH * l Avoid English by simplifying. l Avoid English by providing CI. l Plan lessons that avoid idle time. l Post high-frequency words and expressions around the classroom. l Teach ‘negotiation of meaning’ by not yielding. 26
MINIMIZING ENGLISH * l Encourage circumlocution l Encourage expressions of clarification and assistance: – “I don’t understand. ” – “Please repeat. ” – “Help, please. ” * Do not teach grammar points in the target language. 27
