Conditional Clauses if…
What are they? Conditional Clauses are subordinate adverbial clauses that state a condition on the main clause. They can appear at the beginning or the end of the sentence If they appear at the beginning they need a comma. “If I win the lottery, I’ll travel the world” “I’ll travel the world if I win the lottery. ”
They need a condition or a reason to happen… There are two parts… If reason / condition , Main Clause result
1 st Conditional = Type 1 Main Clause If + Present Simple , Future Tense will / won’t very probable – likely to happen
tell If I _______ (tell) you a secret, will you promise not to tell anyone? will fire If he causes any more problems, I ____ (fire) him. will give washes I _____ (give) him a candy if he ____(wash) my car. will arrest catch The police _____ (arrest) him if they ______ (catch) him.
2 nd Conditional = Type 2 Main Clause If + Past Simple , would + infinitive unprobable – likely not to happen (wish)
knew If I ______ (know) his address, I would give it to you. won would give If she ______ (win) a big prize, she _____ (give) up her job. would look shaved He ______ (look) a lot better if he _______ (shave) more often. would buy had They _____ (buy) him the jacket if they _____ (have) the money.
3 rd Conditional = Type 3 Main Clause If + Past Perfect had + Past Participle , would + Present Perfect have+ Past Participle - ed = Regular verbs 3 rd column = irregular verbs Probability ZERO – will never happen
