What type of verb? • Linking verbs have predicate nominatives and predicate adjectives. • Action verbs have direct objects and indirect objects.

Examples • Miss Lowery is a teacher from Oxford Middle School. Linking verb & Predicate Nominative Action verb • Jack baked Miss Bagley a delicious birthday cake. Indirect object Direct object

How to decide Find the verb Action verb Direct object And/or Linking verb Indirect object Predicate nominative OR Predicate adjective

The Action Verb • If it’s an action verb: 1. cross out any prepositional phrases 2. Label the verb with a V 3. Label the subject with an S 4. Ask who or what receives the action? >if there is a noun to receive it- DO 5. Ask who or what receives the DO? >if there is a noun to receive it- IO

DO/IO Pattern • Remember: S-V-IO-DO S-V

Transitive & Intransitive • Action verbs can be either transitive or intransitive. • Transitive= has a DO • Intransitive = no DO (Linking verbs can NOT be intransitive!)
