COMPLEMENTS
The verb in the sentence forms the greatest number of word-combinations. The adjuncts of all these combinations are united by the term COMPLEMENTS.

Predicative complements (Predicatives) The cheek was pink and round and smooth. To be happy is to be useful.
The words may belong to different parts of speech: nouns, adjectives, pronouns, numerals, verbs (participles, gerunds, infinitive)… • He became a pilot. • His favourite pastime is fishing.
Process predicatives He ought to have apologized. Qualifying predicatives He turned pale.
• Make your mind easy. • Your mind is easy.
Objective complements (Objects) • Writing letters for the homesick patients was her self-imposed duty. • There was no time to see her.
Prepositional Direct He sent me a letter. Prepositionless Indirec He sent me a letter.
The prepositional object with TO or FOR • I offered the student my book. • I offered my book to the student.
Cognate object She slept a sound sleep. = She slept soundly.
Complex object • I hate you to go away. • B. A. Ilyish shows that the object – the whole infinitival complex you to go away.
Adverbial complements (Adverbials) • He said it with irritation.

Qualitative • The boy walked slowly.
Adverbials of comparison • He smiled slightly as if to seal the agreement.
Circumstantial adverbials 1)Adverbials complements of time and frequency I have often seen it before. 2) Adverbials of place and direction Two American girls sat at the next table. 3) Adverbials of cause The car slowed up because of a turn.
