Connector Words • There are several time clauses that you must use correctly. • When, while, after, before, as soon as
Past Time • After (= then in meaning) • After I ate dinner, my son washed the dishes. • I wrote an essay for my class after I did some research on the subject.
Past Time • Before (= X happened. Then y happened) • Before I left my apartment this morning, I made sure that I turned off the stove. • I had to go to the store before I started getting dinner ready.
Past Time • Until (= up to that time) The situation: The movie finished at 10: 00. • I didn’t go to bed until the movie finished. (Therefore, I went to bed after the movie, after 10: 00. )
Past Time • As soon as (= immediately after) • As soon as the movie ended, I went to bed. I was tired. • I gave the teacher my test as soon as I finished writing my test.
Past Time • While (= when but for long actions) • While I was walking in the woods, I saw a bear. (= then) • I was marking some essays while my class was writing a test. (= both long actions at the same time)
Past Time • When (= short action at the same time as a long action) • When my car broke down, I was driving on Baseline Road. • I was eating dinner when my daughter finally arrived.
Past Time • When (= 1 st action, then 2 nd action) • When I stepped onto the bus, I slipped and fell. • 1 st action • then 2 nd action
