Connector Words There are several time clauses that you must use correctly. When, while, after, before, as soon as
Past Time After (= then in meaning) After I ate dinner, my son washed the dishes. I wrote an essay for my class after I did some research on the subject.
Past Time Before (= X happened. Then y happened) Before I left my apartment this morning, I made sure that I turned off the stove. I had to go to the store before I started getting dinner ready.
Past Time Until (= up to that time) The situation: The movie finished at 10:00. I didn’t go to bed until the movie finished. (Therefore, I went to bed after the movie, after 10:00.)
Past Time As soon as (= immediately after) As soon as the movie ended, I went to bed. I was tired. I gave the teacher my test as soon as I finished writing my test.
Past Time While (= when but for long actions) While I was walking in the woods, I saw a bear. (= then) I was marking some essays while my class was writing a test. (= both long actions at the same time)
Past Time When (= short action at the same time as a long action) When my car broke down, I was driving on Baseline Road. I was eating dinner when my daughter finally arrived.
Past Time When (= 1st action, then 2nd action) When I stepped onto the bus, I slipped and fell. 1st action then 2nd action
Future Time Clauses Before Before I go to sleep tonight, I will study for three hours. She is going to get a soccer scholarship ($$) before she graduates from high school.
Future Time Clauses After I promise I will study tonight. After I study, I will go to the movies. (Also = After, I will go to the movies.) I am going to watch a movie after I finish all my homework.
Future Time Clauses When When he goes to his friends, he will tell them the news. They are going to turn off the TV when their mother comes home.
Future Time Clauses As soon as Situation: There is going to be a fire drill (practice). The fire alarm is going to ring tomorrow and everyone will have to leave the school. As soon as the alarm stops, everyone will go inside the school.
