Citations • What are they? – Article Title, Author, Journal Title, Volume Number, Issue Citations • What are they? – Article Title, Author, Journal Title, Volume Number, Issue Number, Page Number, Date Why do we need them? • Style manuals and citation guides • – APA – MLA – Chicago

Citation Makers • Depending upon the size of your paper you have several options Citation Makers • Depending upon the size of your paper you have several options • 3 -5 sources use the auto-citation makers or the citation generator • 10 or more sources use Refworks

Databases • What are they? – Databases are collections of articles, book chapters and Databases • What are they? – Databases are collections of articles, book chapters and even websites – They are the FIRST place you go to find articles for your classes – They are usually subject or content specific • Why do we need them? – Without databases you would be flipping thru hundreds of pages of journals without a clue if your topic is in them!

Vendor name vs. Database name VENDOR…. • are the companies we buy products from Vendor name vs. Database name VENDOR…. • are the companies we buy products from DATABASES… • are the ones that decide how a database interface will look and any value-added options So look for the vendor name to see if it allows auto citation are the CONTENT • • • Even though the interface will look the same topics will vary • So make sure you pick the database with the right content!

Avoiding plagiarism Some common examples of plagiarism are: • copying someone else's words without Avoiding plagiarism Some common examples of plagiarism are: • copying someone else's words without using quotation marks and citing (giving credit to) the source, • paraphrasing or summarizing someone else's words without citing the source, • quoting someone else's words inaccurately, • restating someone else's original or specialized ideas without citing the source, • misrepresenting someone else's words or ideas, • citing the wrong source, and • pretending someone else's work is your own.

In other words, if you use a direct quote that is 50 words long, you should match that with 50 words of your own that include commentary about, analysis of, or reaction to the quotation.

Most strikingly, it is an anonymous voice" (p. 178). • Quote entire sentences or groups of sentences. This option is dangerous. Be careful not to substitute long quotations for your own words and ideas.

To paraphrase, you must alter the syntax (word and phrase order) of the sentence.
