ABOUT HOLIDAYS New Year in Scotland is always a very funny, bright, loud and joyful holiday. Instead Scottish Christmas is a traditional quite family celebration, when the whole family gets together.
ABOUT HOLIDAYS People celebrate the Traditional Scottish Christmas on the 25 th of December. The day before is called Christmas Eve, and the day after is called Boxing Day. These are the working days. January the 1 st and the 2 nd are national holidays in Scotland when everybody celebrates the New Year.
On Christmas Eve people first visit the churches. After that they have a festive table at home. There’s always a lot of food at Christmas Dinner as there’s a tradition to feed everybody who comes in. The first visitor to a home on Christmas Day is called the First Footer. This person must be a man with dark hair and he has to bring special gifts: a coal (the wish of comfort in the house), a slice of bread and a silver coin ( the wish of wealth) and a green sprig (the wish of good health). SCOTTISH TRADITIONS In Scotland New Year is called HOGMANAY. It’s a very merry celebration with dances, songs, different fireworks and fire festivals. It’s the ancient custom of using the fire to drive away evil spirits as a way to purge the old year.
CHRISTMAS DINNER The Scots love good festive meals. Therefore, the traditional festive table is always rich in various dishes and treats. For example, the traditional Christmas treats are cakes with dried fruits, meat dishes, sweet spotted apples, oatcakes and Christmas bread.
