EX 30 • 11 ADONAI said to Moshe, 12 "When you take a census of the people of Yisrael and register them, each, upon registration, is to pay a ransom for his life to ADONAI, to avoid any breakout of plague among them during the time of the census.
EX 30 • 13 Everyone subject to the census is to pay as an offering to ADONAI half a shekel [one-fifth of an ounce of silver]- by the standard of the sanctuary shekel (a shekel equals twenty gerahs). 14 Everyone over twenty years of age who is subject to the census is to give this offering to ADONAI -
EX 30 • 15 the rich is not to give more or the poor less than the half-shekel when giving ADONAI's offering to atone for your lives. 16 You are to take the atonement money from the people of Isra'el and use it for the service in the tent of meeting, so that it will be a reminder of the people of Isra'el before ADONAI to atone for your lives. " • END
EX 30 • This was not a tax as many Christian theologians assume. • It was a token ransom for our lives. In no way did it atone for us. • I know it says “atone” there and that is a correct translation
EX 30 • But atone in Hebrew is “kippur” (like Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement) • But the word “kippur” literally means “covering”.
EX 30 • It doesn’t always take on the connotation that it does with the sacrifices. It just means it covered us • It was simply a reminder that we our lives to G-d.
EX 30 • Also, at first look it may not seem fair that the rich only had to pay as much as the poor or that the poor had to pay as much as the rich. • But we have to understand that it wasn’t a lot of money back then.
EX 30 • Keeping this cost straight across the board was to show that no one individuals life was worth more then anothers.
EX 30 • It helped keep the rich humble in showing that their soul was no more valuable then the poor and it showed the poor that they were as important as the rich.
EX 30 • It was a privilege to give this half shekel and proved as part of one’s membership given above tithes and offerings. • The people actually looked forward to it.
EX 30 • It also kept the Temple funded and it was mandatory. • It’s similar to the Pidyon Haben (redemption of the first born)
EX 30 • The reason it says at the age of 20 is because that was the age you’d be recruited into the military. • We read this in Numbers 1: 2 -3
EX 30 • Numbers 1: 2 -3 • 2 "Take a census of the entire assembly of the people of Isra'el, by clans and families. Record the names of all the men 3 twenty years old and over who are subject to military service in Isra'el. You and Aharon are to enumerate them company by company. • Next Parsha…
1 Sam 18 -42 • 18 Y'honatan said to him, "Tomorrow is Rosh. Hodesh, and you will be missed, because your seat will be empty. 19 The third day, hide yourself well in the same place as you did before; stay by the Departure Stone. 20 I will shoot three arrows to one side, as if I were shooting at a target. 21 Then I will send my boy to recover them. If I tell the boy, 'They're here on this side of you, take them, ' then come - it means that everything is peaceful for you; as ADONAI lives, there's nothing wrong.
1 Sam 18 -42 • 22 But if I tell the boy, 'The arrows are out there, beyond you, ' then get going, because ADONAI is sending you away. 23 As for the matter we discussed earlier, ADONAI is between you and me forever. " 24 So David himself in the countryside. When Rosh. Hodesh came, the king sat down to eat his meal. 25 The king sat at his usual place by the wall. Y'honatan stood up, and Avner sat next to Sha'ul, but David's place was empty. 26 However, Sha'ul didn't say anything that day; because he thought, "Something has happened to him, he is unclean. Yes, that's it, he isn't clean. "
1 Sam 18 -42 • 27 The day after Rosh-Hodesh, the second day, David's place was empty; and Sha'ul said to Y'honatan his son, "Why hasn't Yishai's son come to the meal either yesterday or today? " 28 Y'honatan answered Sha'ul, "David begged me to let him go to Beit-Lechem. 29 He said, 'Please let me go, because our family has a sacrifice in the city, and my brother demanded that I come. So now, if you look on me favorably, please let me get away and see my brothers. ' That's why he hasn't come to the king's table. "
1 Sam 18 -42 • 30 At that Sha'ul flew into a rage at Y'honatan and said, "You crooked rebel! Don't I know that you've made this son of Yishai your best friend? You don't care that you're shaming yourself and dishonoring your mother, do you? 31 Because as long as the son of Yishai lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be secure. Now send and bring him here to me - he deserves to die. " 32 Y'honatan answered Sha'ul his father, "Why should he be put to death? What has he done? "
1 Sam 18 -42 • 33 But Sha'ul threw his spear at him, aiming to kill; Y'honatan could no longer doubt that his father was determined to put David to death. 34 Y'honatan got up from the table in a fury, and he ate no food the second day of the month, both because he was upset over David and because his father had put him to shame.
1 Sam 18 -42 • 35 The next morning Y'honatan went out into the country at the time he had arranged with David, taking with him a young boy. 36 He told the boy, "Now run and find the arrows I'm about to shoot. "As the boy ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.
1 Sam 18 -42 • 37 When the boy reached the place where the arrow was that Y'honatan had shot, Y'honatan shouted at the boy, "Isn't the arrow beyond you? " 38 Y'honatan continued shouting after the boy, "Quick! Hurry! Don't just stand there!" Y'honatan's boy gathered the arrows and returned to his master,
1 Sam 18 -42 • 39 but the boy didn't understand anything about the matter - only Y'honatan and David understood. 40 Y'honatan gave his weapons to his boy and said to him, "Go, carry them to the city. "
1 Sam 18 -42 • 41 As soon as the boy had gone, David got up from a place south of the stone, fell face down on the ground and prostrated himself three times; and they kissed one another and wept each with the other until it became too much for David.
1 Sam 18 -42 • 42 Y'honatan said to David, "Go in peace; because we have sworn, both of us, in the name of ADONAI, that ADONAI will be between me and you, and between my descendants and yours, forever. " 1(42 b) So David got up and left, and Y'honatan went back to the city. • END
Mark 15 1 -20 • 1 As soon as it was morning, the head cohanim held a council meeting with the elders, the Torah-teachers and the whole Sanhedrin. Then they put Yeshua in chains, led him away and handed him over to Pilate. 2 Pilate put this question to him: "Are you the King of the Jews? " He answered him, "The words are yours. " 3 The head cohanim too made accusations against him,
Mark 15 1 -20 • 4 and Pilate again inquired of him, "Aren't you going to answer? Look how many charges they are making against you!" 5 But Yeshua made no further response, to Pilate's amazement. 6 Now during a festival, Pilate used to set free one prisoner, whomever the crowd requested.
Mark 15 1 -20 • 7 There was in prison among the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection a man called Bar-Abba. 8 When the crowd came up and began asking Pilate to do for them what he usually did, 9 he asked them, "Do you want me to set free for you the `King of the Jews'? "
Mark 15 1 -20 • 10 For it was evident to him that it was out of jealousy that the head cohanim had handed him over. 11 But the head cohanim stirred up the crowd to have him release Bar-Abba for them instead. 12 Pilate again said to them, "Then what should I do with the man you call the King of the Jews? "
Mark 15 1 -20 • 13 They shouted back, "Put him to death on the stake!" 14 He asked, "Why? What crime has he committed? " But they only shouted louder, "Put him to death on the stake!" 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the mob, set Bar. Abba free for them; but he had Yeshua whipped and then handed him over to be executed on the stake.
Mark 15 1 -20 • 16 The soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the headquarters building) and called together the whole battalion. 17 They dressed him in purple and wove thorn branches into a crown, which they put on him.
Mark 15 1 -20 • 18 Then they began to salute him, "Hail to the King of the Jews!" 19 They hit him on the head with a stick, spat on him and kneeled in mock worship of him.
Mark 15 1 -20 • 20 When they had finished ridiculing him, they took off the purple robe, put his own clothes back on him and led him away to be nailed to the execution-stake.

Today’s Joke • tell the Rabbi you want a speaking part. "
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Mark 15 is a very important portion and very misunderstood. We’re going to take a very close look at verse 1 today.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • 1 As soon as it was morning, the head cohanim held a council meeting with the elders, the Torah-teachers and the whole Sanhedrin. Then they put Yeshua in chains, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • I’ve talked a little about this before, but I have to go over it in order that we understand the whole verse…It says here in English that the whole Sanhedrin were called together.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • We have to be careful when we see words from the Greek like whole, some, part, most, every, few, all etc. For example we see in Luke 2: 1 it says…
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Luke 2 1 And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • It says “all” right there. However, we know that the American Indians never paid taxes to Caesar Augustus.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • It didn’t even mean all the known world because Rome was at war with various countries and those countries never were conquered and they never paid taxes to Rome.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • In this case it meant all the world that Caesar ruled.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • In this case in mark 15 the word whole is “holon” in Greek. Seems simple, it means whole. But it doesn’t. ὅλον
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Holon means something that is simultaneously a whole and a part. Thereby it can mean part or some, a lot or even a few.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • So every single time you see this word in the New Testament you have to deduce what it’s referring to (and holon is in the Greek New Testament over 20 times)
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Now in this case it can’t mean the whole Sanhedrin and for many reasons.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • For one they didn’t meet at Passover or on any of the Feast days and they didn’t meet on the Shabbat and…
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • they only met in the Hall of Hewn Stone. Not in the places mentioned in the New Testament in relation to Yeshua’s trial.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • There’s extensive information showing that the entire trial of Yeshua was illegal and certainly could not have included the whole Sanhedrin.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • we also want to understand that the Pharisees had nothing to do with the arrest or trial of Yeshua.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Most people assume that the Pharisees were a part of that and they point at the Scriptures that mention “leaders” and “scribes”.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • • Of course there were Sadducean leaders. And all scribes weren’t Pharisees. There were Temple Scribes as well and they were Sadducees. Matter of fact…
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • The Pharisees had a very strict rule for their party concerning turning over a Jew to a Roman. It was considered traitorous and the traitor was killed.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Now, it’s true that the Jews could not put to death anyone without the permission of the Romans at that time. But it doesn’t mean they didn’t do it.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • We know they killed Stephen right on the spot. It was illegal but it was still done in this case.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • We also have to understand that some of the Pharisees had close ties to the Sicarii.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Who were the Sicarii? We read about them in the Brit Hadasha, The Sicarii were part of the sect of the “Zealots”.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Not every Zealot was Sicarii. But every Sicarii was a Zealot.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • It’s quite possible that there were Sicarii that followed Yeshua. The Sicarii are also called “The Dagger Men” (i. e. in Josephus). Simon the Zealot
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • They were basically Assassins, Contract Killers. How could assassins be followers of Yeshua?
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Because they were basically the guerilla militia for the Jews against the Romans… they were freedom fighters! Yeshua wouldn’t have had any problem with that.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • The Sicarii fought for Israel and fought for G-d.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Not that they didn’t make some mistakes sometimes. Very disastrous mistakes.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • • But their intentions were for the things of G-d and they did a lot of good. But they were deadly! (explain their method)
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • So these Sicarii would also take out any traitors including any Pharisee or Zealot who turned over a Jew to the Romans.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Everything we read about the trial of Yeshua was the doing of the Sadducees. Not the Pharisees.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Yeshua was a Pharisee Himself and was protected from the Romans by those of His Party.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Luke 13: 31 31 Just at that moment, the P'rushim came up and said to Yeshua, "Get out and go away from here, because Herod wants to kill you!"
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • No matter what the crime, the Pharisees would “NEVER turn over a Jew to the Romans. It was forbidden. ” Dr. Flusser
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • So Yeshua was turned over to Pilate. Now, Pilate in most Passion plays and movies I’ve seen isn’t the Pilate of history.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • He’s usually kind of seen as not really a bad guy. He says he washes his hands of the whole thing.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • He doesn’t appear as a particularly violent man. Almost sympathetic!
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • The truth is…Pilate was a vicious, vicious individual. He’s mentioned in other places other then the New Testament including in Philo’s works and in Josephus’ works
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Philo writes that Pilate had "vindictiveness and a furious temper, "
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Josephus recounts an incident in which Pilate spent money from the Temple to build an aqueduct…
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • When the Jews protested his actions, Pilate had soldiers hidden in the crowd of the Jews while addressing them.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • After giving the signal, Pilate's soldiers randomly attacked, beat, and killed scores of Jews to silence their petitions.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • There’s many historical accounts concerning Pilate and his cruelty and it’s backed up by the New Testament itself.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Luke 13: 1 tells us this… 1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • Pilate was a butcher. He was so bad that even the Roman Emperor himself (Tiberius) had to discipline Pilate for his ruthlessness. Tiberius
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • When a Roman Emperor has to discipline or police another Roman for bad behavior… that’s pretty bad.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Pilate in my opinion was insane. He didn’t come to a good end either. Eusebius tells us (Historia Ecclesiae ii: 7) he was exiled to Gaul by Caligula (for additional disciplinary reasons)…
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • • and eventually committed suicide there. So hopefully that clears up verse 1 of Mark.
The Rebbe’s Parsha Running Commentary on Mark 15 • Once these things are understood, the rest of the book is a little easier to understand.
Messianic Judaism 101 Class 2 By Rabbi Stanley
This Class • In this class we will study more history of the First Church so we can better understand the Modern Messianic Movement.
This Class • We’ll learn more about how the sect of the Nazarenes were still considered to be Jews even though they were persecuted by other Jews.
This Class • Then we’re gonna meet a couple of the many Jewish miracle workers of the First Century and close with one of the major differences between us and today’s Church.
Dr. Ron Moseley • First, let’s meet once again Dr. Ron Moseley… • Studied at Princeton Theological Seminary and Oxford University. He has a Masters in Jewish Studies, a PHD in Second Temple History, a Dr of Phil. in Religion and Society and a Dr of Literature in Research.
Dr. Ron Moseley • He spent 12 summers in Israel and studied at the American Institute of Holy Land Studies on Har. Zion. • He is both a Fellow and a Scholar at the Oxford Society of Scholars having written over 80 courses for Bible Colleges in over 18 countries.
Many Sects • As I’ve mentioned before there were many sects of Judaism. • According to Dr. Ron Moseley there were nearly 30 of them.
Many Sects • The Talmud says that 24 of these were at one time or another considered to be outside of the mainstream of Judaism.
Many Sects • Besides the more well known sects of the Pharisees and Sadducees and the Essenes were others such as the Ebionites, Boethusians Genistae and the Meristae (The Dividers). Ebionites website
Many Sects • St. Justin Martyr lists many of these as well • All different then each other but still Jewish. • The Nazarenes were also a Jewish sect.
Many Sects • If it hadn’t have been for the Bar Khoba revolt in 132 AD we’d all still be worshipping together in the Synagogues with our Jewish brethren. • That being said…
Many Sects • the various smaller sects would often be persecuted by the larger more orthodox sects. While at the same time still considering them to be Jewish.
Many Sects • So it’s really no surprise that Shaul (Paul) would go out and persecute the Notzreem.
Many Sects • Yeshua Himself even addresses this in Mathew 10: 17 • 17"Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues. ”
Many Sects • Notice it says, in their synagogues. • Guess what? Jews didn’t flog non Jews. • They didn’t go out and kidnap non Jews for breaking Commandments and haul them into their synagogues.
Many Sects • If a Gentile converted they then became subject to all the same Laws as the Jews. • If they didn’t convert, the Rabbis said they had “no place in the world to come”.
Many Sects • Also remember any gentile that converted was no longer to be called a Gentile, that was forbidden.
Miracle Workers • Now, I know that most Churches say that the First Church was very different because Yeshua performed miracles and no one else did in those days. • But that is not true.
Miracle Workers • There were many First Century miracle workers let’s look at 2 of them… • Honi ha. Magael • He lived in the First Century. • He was a well known Jewish scholar
Miracle Workers • He was famous for his ability to successfully pray for rain. • On one occasion when G-d did not send rain well into the winter Honi drew a circle in the dust, stood inside it, and informed God that he would not move until it rained.
Miracle Workers • When it began to drizzle, Honi, in true Jewish style, told God that he was not satisfied and expected more rain! • It then began to pour. He explained that he wanted a calm rain, at which point the rain calmed to a normal calm rain. • After this incident he was given the nickname, Honi the Circle Drawer.
Miracle Workers • This was before Yeshua was here. • Honi was a well known scholar and pious man
Miracle Workers • He was almost excommunicated by the High Jewish Court for the way he talked to Gd so irreverently (though we see hints of that with some other Biblical characters). • However, the brother of the Queen excused him, saying that he was Honi and had a special relationship with God. Tomb of Honi the Circle Drawer
Miracle Workers • Another Rabbi named Hanina Ben. Dosa was also famous for his miracles. • The son of Rabbi Gamaliel II (grandson of Paul’s Rabbi) had become ill and Rabbi Gamaliel II sent a messenger to Rabbi Hanina. Tomb of Rabbi Gamaliel II
Miracle Workers • When Rabbi Hanina heard what had happened he went out and prayed. • When he came back he told the messenger that the boy had been healed. • The messenger had some doubt and he wrote down the exact time. Tomb of Hanina Ben. Dosa
Miracle Workers • When he got back to Rabbi Gamaliel II he found that the boy was well and asked Rabbi Gamaliel II what time the healing had occurred. • It was the exact same time as what the messenger had noted down before.
Miracle Workers • It was after Yeshua’s time here on earth, by about a generation. • But note that Rabbi Gamaliel II trusted Rabbi Hanina
Miracle Workers • And this Rabbi (Gamaliel II) had some very serious connections with the Messianic Movement and Yeshua’s Disciples. • His grandfather had saved many of the Disciples including Peter. (Acts 5: 33)
Miracle Workers • He was related to Rabbi Eliezar who was condemned for being a Believer in Yeshua. • Also notice that Rabbi Akiva was killed for his participation in the Bar Khoba War.
Miracle Workers • A war where anyone who had joined that force had to declare Bar Kochba the Messiah. • The Messianics wouldn’t do that and they lived… • Why was Rabbi Gamaliel II still alive after the Romans defeated them? • Is it possible that he was one of the Messianics who survived?
Miracle Workers • He was the first person to lead the Sanhedrin as Nasi after the fall of the second temple. • Makes you wonder if he too was a Believer. • If he was a Believer and trusted Rabbi Hanina’s faith, it’s possible that Hanina was a Believer in Yeshua too.
Miracle Workers • I’m not saying they all were. But the more you read about the ancient Rabbis, you start seeing more and more connections like these.
Miracle Workers • I know for sure that all the Jews weren’t the bad guys like the Church has taught for 2, 000 years. • Maybe the Church is also wrong about many of these Rabbis.
Miracle Workers • Back to the miracle workers… • So there were Miracle workers in the First Century. • But there were certain miracles they were never able to perform.
Miracle Workers • They could cure a blind man but not one who was blind from birth. • They could heal many diseases but not leprosy. • They could even cast out demons, but not a mute demon.
Miracle Workers • Yeshua however did all these things. • This sheds light on Matt 11: 4 -6 when John the Immerser, incorrectly called John The Baptist (baptizo= to dye), had his messengers ask Yeshua if He was “The One to come”
Miracle Workers • Yeshua answered… • “The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. ” Matt 11: 4 -6
Miracle Workers • He probably answered more like… • “I cured the blind from birth, I cleansed the lepers and caused the mute to speak. ” • That would’ve been a direct Messianic answer to John The Immerser’s question.
Are you the Messiah? • While we’re on this passage of Scripture let’s take a look at what the Sanhedrin's response would’ve been once they heard that someone was claiming to be the Messiah.
Are you the Messiah? • By Law the Sanhedrin was to investigate the situation in two stages: The first stage was called the “Stage of Observation. "
Are you the Messiah? • A delegation was formed to investigate only by way of observation. These delegates could come from a variety of towns and cities.
Are you the Messiah? • This delegation was to observe what was being said, what was being done, and what was being taught. They were not permitted to ask any questions or raise any objections.
Are you the Messiah? • After a period of observation, they were then to go to Jerusalem, report to the Sanhedrin and give a verdict…
Are you the Messiah? • …was the movement significant, or was the movement insignificant? If the movement was decreed to be insignificant, the matter would be dropped like an unkosher hotdog.
Are you the Messiah? • But if the movement was declared to be significant, there would, then, be a second stage of investigation… called the “Stage of Interrogation. "
Are you the Messiah? • In this stage, they would interrogate the individual or members of the movement. This time, they would ask questions and raise objections to discover whether the claims should be accepted or rejected.
Are you the Messiah? • We see this play out exactly in the Brit Hadasha in Luke 5… • Vs 17… • 17. Pharisees and teachers of the law, who had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. • 18 Some men came carrying a paralytic on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus. • 21. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying (this word is not in the Greek), Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
Are you the Messiah? • First… so many delegates came out that the local people couldn’t even get the paralyzed man into see Yeshua.
Are you the Messiah? • Then we see He read their thoughts and their hearts because the delegates weren’t saying anything to Him at that point. • They were in the “Stage of Observation”
Are you the Messiah? • Then, later on in Scripture they come back and interrogate Him as per Jewish Law. • That’s what this passage is about! • See if we understand the times, the culture and the Laws of First Century Judaism, things start to become clear.
We are not “The Church” • I’m sorry to say, but most of today’s Church is very unclear. • They’re foggy because they’ve left the Jews out of the very Jewish book called the Bible.
We are not “The Church” • Messianic Judaism is not another Church. • There’s lots of Churches out there, that’s not what we are here. • We’re a Messianic Synagogue and there’s only one of these in this valley so far.
We are not “The Church” • Messianic Judaism believes that Yeshua is the Messiah but we don’t accept any paganism in our walk of faith. • We teach that the Law is still in effect and that if we break it, we fall under the curse of sin and death
We are not “The Church” • Galatians 3: 10 (Dr. David Stern Translation) • 10 For everyone who depends on legalistic observance of Torah commands lives under a curse, since it is written, "Cursed is everyone who does not keep on doing everything written in the Scroll of the Torah. "
We are not “The Church” • We see it like the Apostle Paul. • He said the Law is “holy just and good”… not done away with as the Church teaches. • Paul even said he loved the Law. • The Church says they also love the Law but they then ignore it.
We are not “The Church” • You can’t ignore something you love!
We are not “The Church” • You see, all the law hangs on two things • Matt 22 KJV • 35 Then one of them, which was a lawyer, asked him a question, tempting him, and saying , 36 Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it , Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.
We are not “The Church” • The law hangs on love so why would one want to abolish anything that is based on love? • The whole reason G-d gave us His law is because He loves us. • Why would we want to ignore it?
We are not “The Church” • The Law when understood is something you’ll begin to desire. • Torah (Law) means instruction. • Abraham wanted to be close to G-d. There was no Bible, no one else knew G-d so Abraham asked G-d for some help.
We are not “The Church” • So G-d said, ok and He gave Abraham some instruction. • Later on Moses was leading the Children of Israel through the desert and it was a tough time for Moses. • He had a lot of people that he was in charge of and it was a very stressful time for him.
We are not “The Church” • So he asked G-d for some help, he needed some instructions. • So G-d said, “Ok, I’ll help. ” and He gave Moses some Instructions. • Yeshua came years later because the world needed some clarification on the previous Instructions that G-d had given.
We are not “The Church” • There were 30 different sects so there were some differences between them. • Yeshua came and gave some additional instructions and said, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: 3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe , that observe and do. ”
We are not “The Church” • Which was perfect instructions, very clear… do what the Pharisees tell you! • As for me personally, I still need some instructions from time to time. I’ve heard so much false doctrine from Churches/Bible College through the years that sometimes I have to get some clarification.
We are not “The Church” • So I have to go and read the instruction manual. If it’s still not clear then I go and read what the Pharisees had to say about it.
We are not “The Church” • Then my questions are answered and then all is well in Stan Land • 1 Timothy 1 confirms that G-d’s instructions are good and it says… • 8. Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully.
We are not “The Church” • Ya know, it’s amazing to me when I tell someone that we keep Sabbath and they act as if that’s some kind of rule. • I have no rules in my life, not one. I am free.
We are not “The Church” • Unfortunately Christians are double minded about this. • I tell them I keep Sabbath and they look at me and say, “Oh I couldn’t be a part of a religion that has to take one day off a week, I just couldn’t do that, it’s too difficult. . .
We are not “The Church” • I couldn’t be leagalistic like that. ” • But yet they take Sunday off for a day of worship. • They are bound by keeping man’s laws rather then G-d’s Laws. • It’s a great deception.
We are not “The Church” • I tell them I keep the Feasts of the L-rd. • “Oh I couldn’t do that, Jewish holidays, very leagalistic… But don’t you dare talk about my Christmas or it will strain our friendship”.
We are not “The Church” • They may not use these words, but the message is clear and your friendship, all of a sudden, isn’t what it used to be.
We are not “The Church” • No where in the Bible does it say to celebrate Christmas. • It does instruct us that the Feasts of the L-rd are to be kept forever. • There is a polarization that’s happening in the Church concerning G-d’s Instructions.
We are not “The Church” • The Church says you don’t have to follow G-d’s Instructions. • Messianic Judaism says • We get to keep G-d’s Instructions. • It brings us closer to Him
We are not “The Church” • Not keeping the Law (Instruction) separates us from G-d. • That’s exactly what sin is, something that separates us from G-d. • 1 John 3 is clear… • 4 Whoever commits sin transgresses the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
We are not “The Church” • If one does away with G-d’s Law they are living in sin and know nothing of G-d. • We can only make excuses for these people and Pastors for so long. • Then comes the time for us to say to ourselves, “My Pastor is speaking against G-d’s Word”.
We are not “The Church” • That is the stark realization. • I’m not saying go out and run to your pastor and show him where he’s wrong. • I’m just saying we can only make excuses for the people we love for so long.
We are not “The Church” • And we don’t even give the unsaved that option if we’re to be honest. • If I ask you right now if the unsaved go to heaven, you’d say no. • If I asked you, “Why? ” You’d say “Because they are in sin”. • What did we just read?
We are not “The Church” • sin is the transgression of the law. • This goes for everyone! No one is exempt not even “Christians” or “Pastors” or “Messianic Jews”. • It’s a hard word but true nevertheless.
We are not “The Church” • Do you know who James letter is addressed to? • It’s right there in chapter 1
We are not “The Church” • Yes, we are all at different places in our walks with G-d and all sin is directly related to what we know.
We are not “The Church” • But the claim of ignorance can only go so far because the Bible says clearly in John 16 • 13 However, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth.
We are not “The Church” • James 4 (talking to the Church again) says • 8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. • Just a few verses before that in verse 4 it says this…
We are not “The Church” • know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God. • Who is the world? • Those who don’t keep G-d’s Instructions.
We are not “The Church” • Not keeping G-d’s Instructions is darkness and Light can not dwell there.
We are not “The Church” • We have to be careful who we align ourselves with. • G-d’s Word is true. • Shabbat Shalom
The End
