A Unique Institution • Chatham House (The Royal Institute of International Affairs) is an independent international affairs think-tank and membership organisation for individuals, corporations, governments and NGOs • It produces independent and rigorous analysis of critical global, regional and country-specific challenges and opportunities • It aims to shape policy by encouraging new ideas and forward thinking in international affairs • For five years running, Chatham House has been ranked top non-US think tank in a comprehensive global survey. 2

Chatham House Rule The Rule was founded in 1926 and is used around the world to help facilitate confidential discussion. "When a meeting, or part thereof, is held under the Chatham House Rule, participants are free to use the information received, but neither the identity nor the affiliation of the speaker(s), nor that of any other participant, may be revealed". 4

Income and Funding • Total net assets 2012 -13: $16 m/£ 10 m • Income is generated from membership fees, sponsorship and charitable donations from trusts, foundations, companies and individuals. • Chatham House receives no core funding from government. 5

Independence • Chatham House is precluded by its Charter from expressing any institutional view or policy on any aspect of international affairs. • It does not receive any statutory government funding and is not a government organization, although some government departments are corporate members of Chatham House and may fund specific projects. 6

Chatham House Research is core to all Chatham House activities. Energy, Environment & Resources Conducts high-level research on critical issues of energy security, environment and resource governance. • Energy Security • Climate Security and Low Carbon Growth • Resources, Politics and Global Trends • Forestry and Fisheries Management • Food Security 8

International Economics Produces policy-oriented research and analysis of the challenges facing the global economy. Area Studies and International Law This research department incorporates the work of our regional programmes to ensure that Chatham House is well-placed to identify potential sources of conflict and emerging trends. They are: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe (including Turkey), the Middle East and North Africa, Russia and Eurasia. Work on International Law includes discussion of international legal issues and their practical application to current problems in international relations. 10
