How it started • 2000 I set up a charity dental unit in Mwanza at request of a few school friends there with Prem Kapoor. • Musoma reunion 2002, initiated by ex-Musomian, Harshad Kothari FCCA was my inspiration to focus on my home town Musoma • I then secured a £ 4 K donation from BDA Southern Counties (The then President Martin Miller) for Musoma Hospital. • With some additional fund raising Prem Kapoor, Pravin Shah and I set up a Resusus Unit at the Musoma Hospital • Since 2006, Dental VTs Thames Charity Walk has raised substantial sponsorship. • Since 2015, Dr Chirag Patel (son of Subhash who was born in Musoma) has given it a major boost

Musoma is the centre of the world! At least if you manipulate the world map on the computer as I have! Ha Ha Ha! Certainly the cradle of mankind. Olduvai Gorge where human evolution began is only a 100 miles away! Musoma

Why Musoma (Mara Region)? Brown regions are poorer areas of Tanzania (slide courtesy of J Marcus) In the 1960 there were 7 gold mines in Mara Region.
Why Musoma (Mara Region)? …. “whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, it is because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It is your mission on earth” …. ”And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it”
How big is Mara Region? (Slide courtesy of J Marcus. Serengeti is part of Mara region)

Prevention of dental problems and simple treatment may avoid scenes like this Noma or Ameloblastoma Predisposing factors include: • Unsafe drinking water • Malnutrition (particularly A Vit and B) • Dehydration and poor oral hygiene • Proximity to unkempt livestock • Recent illness • immunodeficiency disease (AID)
Promoting Oral Health in Africa (WHO document May 2016) Prevention Risk of this condition can be reduced through significant public health measures such as promoting good nutritional practices, oral and general hygiene, exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life, immunization against prevalent communicable diseases, use of bednets to prevent malaria, and segregation of livestock from human living areas. Education about noma is crucial, as it is treatable in its early stages. Ideally, everybody in a community should be able to identify the first signs of noma (spontaneous bleeding of the gum, fever, bad breath and sometimes facial swelling) and advise about seeking help at the local PHC centre.
