Chapter Three To Kill a Mockingbird
lunch invitation Scout catches up with Walter at lunch and starts “rubbing his nose in the dirt, ” but Jem stops her. Jem invites Walter Cunningham, whom he recognizes as the son of the farmer Atticus has helped, home for lunch.
Walter talks about crops and animals with Atticus as if he is an adult! “While Walter piled food on his plate, he and Atticus talked together like two men, to the wonderment of Jem and me. Atticus was expounding upon farm problems and when Walter interrupted to ask if there was any molasses in the house. ” (24)
Scout is HORRIFIED when Walter pours the molasses all over his dinner. Atticus silently reprimands her: “Atticus shook his head at me. . . ”
Calpurnia takes Scout to the kitchen for a talking to: “. . . That boy’s yo’ comp’ny and if he wants to eat the table cloth you let him, you hear? ” “He ain’t company, Cal, he’s just a Cunningham --” “Don’t matter who they are, any body steps foot in this house’s yo’ comp’ny, and don’t you let me catch you remarkin’ on their ways like you was so high and mighty!. . . ” (24)
Jem and Walter head back to school. Scout hangs back to tell Atticus how unfair Calpurnia is and that he should consider “packing her off. ” “Atticus’s voice was flinty. ‘I’ve no intention of getting rid of her, now or ever. We couldn’t operate a single day without Cal, have you ever thought of that? You think about how much Cal does for you, and you mind her, you hear? ” (25)
Back at school, Miss Caroline is shrieking, “It’s alive!” What does Little Chuck Little -- “a born gentleman” -- think she’s screaming about? What is she actually screaming about? Where is “it”?
Lice - “cooties”
“The boy stood up. He was the filthiest human I had ever seen. His neck was dark gray, the backs of his hands were rusty, and his fingernails were black depe into the quick. He peered at Miss Caroline from a fist-sized clean space on his face. ” (26 -27) Who is this?
What is his response to Miss Caroline’s instructions to bathe himself before coming back to school tomorrow? What do the children reveal about his school attendance?
Scout is down-hearted after her first day of school. “. . . the prospect of spending nine months refraining from reading and writing made me think of running away. ” (28) How does Atticus treat Scout after school? How does Calpurnia treat her? What does Scout reveal to Atticus?
Scout’s worry “-- and she said you taught me all wrong, so we can’t ever read any more, ever. Please don’t send me back [to school], please sir. ” (29) What advice does Atticus give to Scout?
“. . . if you can learn a simple trick, you’ll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view - - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it. ” (30)
