Chapter 6 Groups
• A Group – 1. Share regular contact – 2. Share some ways of thinking, feeling, behaving – 3. Take one another’s behavior into account – 4. have one or more interests in common
Social Category • People who share a social characteristic • Ex: – High School Seniors – Women – Men
Social Aggregate • People temporarily in the same place at the same time • Ex: Concert
Primary Group • People who are emotionally close, know one another well, and seek one another’s company • Ex: Family, Childhood play groups, high school and college friends
• Primary Relationship – interactions that are intimate, personal, caring and fulfilling
Secondary Groups • Secondary Group – People who share only part of their live while focusing on a goal or task • Ex: Work groups, volunteer groups
Secondary Relationships • Secondary Relationship – impersonal interactions involving limited parts of personalities • Ex: interactions between clerks and customers; employers and workers
Social Interaction • 1. Cooperation – Form of interaction in which individuals or groups combine their efforts to reach some goal • Ex: Natural disasters; rules of the game
Social Interaction • Conflict – Interaction aimed at defeating an opponent • Ex: Basketball team; 60 s &70 s protests
Social Interaction • Social Exchange – A voluntary action performed in the expectation of getting a reward in return • Ex: You scratch my back I’ll scratch yours.
Social Interaction • Coercion – Interaction in which individuals or groups are forced to behave in a particular way • Ex: Prisoners of war; speeding tickets
Social Interaction • Conformity – Behavior that matches group expectations • Groupthink – self-deceptive thinking that is based on conformity to group beliefs, and created by group pressure to conform.
