CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDS Software § CERN Document Server software is a document repository application that enables to run an electronic preprint server, a digital library catalogue or a document archive on the web. § It has been deployed at CERN through an incremental organicgrowth SW development model during the last ten years § It uses current industry standards, e. g. the US Library of Congress standard to describe documents, Unicode, OAI, etc. § It uses freeware technology: My. SQL RDBMS; CDSware Indexes; Apache/Python. It is free software, licensed under GNU General Public Licence (GPL)
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDSware Features (I) § Navigable collection tree – Documents organised in collections – Regular and virtual collection trees – Customizable portalboxes for each collection § Powerful search engine – Specially designed indexes to provide Google-like search speeds for repositories of up to 1, 500, 000 records – Customizable simple and advanced search interfaces – Combined metadata, fulltext and citation search in one go – Results clustering by collection – Interface in 16 languages
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDSware Features (II) § Flexible metadata – Standard metadata format (MARC) – Handling articles, books, theses, photos, videos, museum objects and more – Customizable display and linking rules § User personalization – user-defined document baskets – user-defined automated email notification alerts – basket-sharing within user groups – user comments and reviews of documents § Multiple output formats: HTML, XML, MARC, OAI, DC
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDS Evolution (I) § pre-1993 - paper dissemination of preprints by CERN Library § 1993 - CERN Preprint Server on the web – institutional repository: CERN preprints The “paperful” office – world wide HEP coverage § 1996 - CERN Web Library – adding books, periodicals, and other library objects § 1999 - CERN Agenda Indico – sister application for conferences, meetings and workshops § 2000 - CERN Document Server First computer used by CERN library in the 60’s – adding multimedia material and internal notes
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 - 25, 000 distinct users per month - 270, 000 searches per month (~9, 000 per day) - 800, 000 records; 360, 000 full texts - 60, 000 new acquisitions per year (2, 000 by CERN authors) - 500 collections

CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDS Evolution (II) § 2002 - CDSware solution installed world wide, e. g. : – HBZ NRW, Cologne, Germany – Università La Sapienza, Rome, Italy – Aristotle University, Thessaloniki, Greece – Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium – UCSD, San Diego, USA – RERO, Martigny, Switzerland – EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland First computer used by CERN library Computer centre in 2004 § 2004 – CDSware used as the document management system by CERN Directorate offices § 2005 – CERN/EPFL collaboration on CDSware
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDS Today § The CDS Software Consortium framework – funded jointly by CERN and EPFL – open to projects with interested partners (e. g. : EIF) – to develop further solutions in the domain of digital Library and Conference management § On-going R&D: – ranking of scientific documents – automatically creating document clusters – increasing the size of repository up to 10 million records § CDSware & Indico – CDSware to be used as Indico Search Engine at CERN – daily harvest and indexing of all metadata
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 CDSware and Other Systems § CDSware and Library Automated Systems – traditional library systems (Aleph 500, VTLS, etc) are used to manage books, periodicals, series but do not cope with heterogeneous material – specific library-oriented features and use experience § CDSware and institutional repositories software – similar products running institutional repositories: DSpace, EPrints, Fedora – support small repositories only (less than 50 K documents) § CDSware and EDMS systems – very different scope – specific features linked to equipment/component management
CERN Document Server Jean-Yves. Le. Meur@cern. ch 19 tth January 2006 Conclusions § CDSware solution: a powerful, flexible, suitable for very large collections § certified at CERN as the long term electronic archive § tries to combine the best of traditional library world and modern information retrieval technology § designed to cope with new dissemination channels of scientific results of LHC Thank you for your attention !
