What is ENVIS? § § Environmental Information System Established in December, 1982 By the Government of India Focal point: Mo. EF § Website : www. envis. nic. in § Focus § On providing environmental information to decision makers, policy planners, scientists and engineers, educators, research workers, and interested individuals etc. all over the country. 2

Network of Centres ENVIS is § Decentralised system § With a network of distributed subject oriented Centres (78) set up in different organisations/establishments in the country in selected areas of environment § Ensuring integration of national efforts in environmental information collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination to all concerned 3

ENVIS Objectives Long-term § to build up a repository and dissemination centre in Environmental Science and Engineering § to gear up the modern technologies of acquisition, processing, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information of environmental nature § to support and promote research, development and innovation in environmental information technology 4

ENVIS Objectives Short-term § to provide national environmental information service relevant to present needs and capable of development to meet the future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information § to build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities with the ultimate objectives of disseminating information speedily to the users § to promote, national and international cooperation and liaison for exchange of environment related information § to promote, support and assist education and personnel training programmes designed to enhance environmental information processing and utilisation capabilities § to promote exchange of information amongst developing countries 5

CEE as an ENVIS Centre § Established 1992 § To support the information needs in Environmental Education of the national and international community 6

Responsibilities (defined by the focal point) § § § Building up a good collection of books, reports and journals in the particular subject area of environment Establishment of linkages with all information sources in the particular subject area of environment Responding to user queries Establishment of a data bank on some selected parameters relating to the subject area Coordination with the Focal Point for supplying relevant, adequate and timely information to the users Bringing out newsletters/publications in their subject area for wide dissemination. 7

Internship in Information Services IIS Objectives § § § To impart knowledge and skills for using different systems, tools and techniques including computer and internet technology in library and documentation work and services To impart practical experience of working on projects related to different services in Librarianship and Documentation To acquaint future librarians with diverse information sources in the fields of Environment, Environmental Education, Sustainable Development etc. and equip them to manage environmental library and information systems 24
