Results of World War Two Political, Social and Economic
Economic • Military cost of $1. 1 billion. Property damage over $230 billion. U. S. alone spent $330 billion. • Europe and Japan ravaged by military action, face difficult economic recovery. • Communism spread to eastern and central Europe and several Asian countries.
Social • Close to 50 -60 million dead and over 34 million wounded. U. S. —over one million dead or wounded. • Many displaced persons • The ground war destroyed much of the countryside and cities • Some people lived in partially destroyed homes with no water, electricity, and little food. Others wandered Europe hoping to find family members.
Political • Fascist governments of Germany, Italy, and Japan were overthrown. • U. Political/Social • After WWII the surviving Jews of the Holocaust needed a place to return. • 1948 the State of Israel was created by the U. N. with heavy support from Britain and the United States. • Since this time there has been much conflict between the Jews and Palestinians. This conflict is in the news practically everyday.

The Holocaust • Holocaust—the systematic murder of Jews carried out by Nazis. • Six million Jews died. • 1935—Jews forced to wear a yellow star of David on their clothing so they could be identified. • Nuremburg Trials-conducted in Germany • 24 Nazi war criminals tried 12 were executed and cremated in the same ovens as those during the Holocaust.
Japanese Interment • No one was found to be a spy for Japan • Thousands of Japanese had lost their homes • Japanese American Citizens League-pushed government to compensate the people for their losses • 1965 Congress authorized 38 millionfor the losses (still only less than a tenth of their actual losses) • JACL pushed further and a bill was passed in 1978 another bill awarded 20, 000 to every American sent to a relocation camp. • Checks were awarded in 1990 with a letter from then President George Bush apologizing for the wrongs
