Plan. Environmental issue -general concept; Types of Ecological Problems; Conclusion.
Environmental issue -general concept Environmental issues are harmful aspects of human activity on the biophysical environment. Environmentalism, a social and environmental movement that started in the 1960 s, addresses environmental issues through advocacy, education and activism.
The carbon dioxide equivalent of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere has already exceeded 400 parts per million (NOAA) (with total "long-term" GHG exceeding 455 parts per million). (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report) This level is considered a tipping point. "The amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is already above threshold that can potentially cause dangerous climate change.
Types of Ecological Problems. Water pollution. One of the most important pollution problems is the oceans. Many ships sail in the ocean water- fishing ships, some ships carrying people, some carrying oil. Many sea birds die because of the polluted water. Many fish are dying in the sea, others are getting contaminated.
Air pollution. Another important problem is air pollution. Cars and factories pollute the air we use. Their fume also destroys the ozone layer which protects the Earth from the dangerous light of the Sun. Aerosols create large “holes” in the ozone layer round the Earth. Burning coal and oil leads to global warming which may bring about a change in the world’s climate.
Waste. Waste(s) is a pejorative term for unwanted materials. The term can be described as subjective and inaccurate because waste to one person is not waste to another. Litter refers to waste disposed of improperly.
Land use. Land use is the human use of land. Land use involves the management and modification of natural environment or wilderness into built environment such as fields, pastures, and settlements. It also has been defined as "the arrangements, activities and inputs people undertake in a certain land cover type to produce, change or maintain it" (FAO, 1997 a; FAO/UNEP, 1999).
Nuclear power debate The nuclear power debate is about the controversy which has surrounded the deployment and use of nuclear fission reactors to generate electricity from nuclear fuel for civilian purposes. The debate about nuclear power peaked during the 1970 s and 1980 s, when it "reached an intensity unprecedented in the history of technology controversies", in some countries.
Conclusion. Human progression has brought many environmental problems along with it. Due to greater numbers of human beings on the planet, the level of environmental danger has risen significantly. There are countless environmental problems in today's world, but a few are more prominent than others.
