CASE STUDY
The best learning happens in real life with real problems and real people and not in classrooms.
Materials must: improve the language acquisition process; offer more opportunities to develop the productive language skills of speaking and writing; Be relevant for students’ future professional communication
Business case studies give basic information about a company (a short corporate profile); present a problem which needs to be solved; additional information (in the form of charts, graphs and tables).
Case studies teach students how to apply their theoretical knowledge of management, economics or finance combined with analytical thinking in realistic business problems solution in the medium of English.
Case method: increases student proficiency with written and oral communication; improves collaboration and team-work; encourages active learning; enables key skills development; increases the students' desire to learn
SKILLS: group working; individual study skills; information gathering and analysis; time management; presentation skills; practical skills.
STEPS: reading the case discussing the situation identifying the problem analyzing the quantitative data filling up information gaps and putting forward hypotheses defining priorities and limitations discussing weaknesses and threats presenting company goals presenting alternative solutions of the problem discussing the solutions and choosing the best one preparing an action plan, assigning tasks and setting the deadlines.
TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL CASE STUDY 1. Start with a simple case first. 2. Discuss the purpose and suggested methods for doing a case assignment. 3. If cases are done in a team, introduce students to resources for team dynamics. 4. Allow sufficient class time for students to meet with their teams. 5. Establish discussion etiquette guidelines. 6. Take sufficient time to introduce the narrative and establish the case facts. 7. Make sure you give students an opportunity to provide their reactions and feedback.

CASE STUDY AND PROJECT-BASED LEARNING ARE CHARACTERIZED BY: being predominantly task-oriented with activity often set by tutor; being supervised by the tutor; students being required to produce a solution; necessity of supporting lectures which equip students to undertake activity.
