Carl the construction worker has a problem. Carl needs to build a house for a family moving into the neighborhood. Carl’s boss gave him lots of tools and lots of materials, but he doesn’t know how to use them. Do you think you can help Carl build the house?
Carl looks to his pile of materials. He notices that there a lot of boards made out of wood, but they are all different sizes. Carl thinks it would be best if he could make all the boards the same size. What should Carl use to measure the boards to make sure they are all the same size?
Carl takes the measured boards and lays them flat on a table. Now that Carl has measured the boards, he needs to cut them all to the right sizes. What tool should Carl use to cut the boards?
Once all the boards are cut, Carl needs to make the frame of the house. He knows the frame needs to be very strong so it can keep the house standing for a long time. What tools does Carl need to use to hold the boards together and make a strong frame?
Carl finishes framing the house with the wooden boards and decides to that it is time to make the wall that will go in the front yard. He walks over to a large pile of bricks sitting in the corner. Carl notices that the bricks are not flat on the top and he thinks that the wall should have a flat top. What tool can help Carl make sure the bricks flat on the top?
Carl finally gets the bricks to lay flat and now he needs to hold them together. He finds a wheel barrel full of dry cement that his boss left for him. Carl knows that he needs to mix water with the cement in order to use it. What can Carl use to get the water into the wheel barrel?
Carl finishes with the brick wall and leaves the cement to dry. He decides that the next thing to do is put wall paper up inside the house. The wall paper comes in a big roll which Carl needs to cut into strips. What can Carl use to cut the wall paper so he can put it up on the wall?
After finishing the wall paper, Carl goes outside and looks at the beautiful house. Carl knows his boss will be very happy with his work, but he also knows he never could have done it without your help! “Thank you!” Carl says. “You are all great civil engineers!”
