Format Define the problem Roadblocks Strategies Support for strategies Implementation
What is Extended Learning Time? Additional time added to or built into/on to to the current school day. Often for additional instruction in literacy and math.
Problem Where to find this time, due to: Union restrictions/ teacher buy in State/Credit Requirements Facility/Bussing Issues Sports/ Extracurriculars Attendance Transportation
Strategy Extend the School Day Ron Karsen, Principal of Dayton Street School in Newark, NJ We decided that we needed to build in more time for content areas during the day and also support teachers and help build their content capacity. To build in more time, we changed the whole school day: now, it’s from 8: 35 a. m. to 4: 35 p. m. every day. We doubled the time for math, doubled the time for language arts, and ensured that students had the opportunity to take an hour of science and social studies every day.
Positive/Negative Extend the school Day Positive Negative Additional time for instruction Difficult for transportation Time to double math/english May exceed union time Credit recovery/intervention Sports/E. C. late No guaranteed impact
Strategy Flexible Scheduling- Borrowing Seat Time Bi-Weekly Flex Schedule 50 min. Social Studies 50 min. Science 50 min. 30 min. English Flex Time 180 min
Positive/Negative Flexible Scheduling Positive Can provide additional credit Works better for teacher teams Allows for regroupings Can be used for many strategies Negative Requires an innovative scheduler and teachers Requires teacher teams Can cause more transitions
Strategy Built in Intervention- ZAP and other programs 1 ENGLISH SCIENCE 2 ENGLISH SCIENCE 3 ZAP (Zeros Arent Permitted) Math Skinny Social Studies Skinny 4
Positive/Negative Built in Intervention Positive Negative Provides time for reteaching/extension Requires an innovative scheduler and teachers Culture of work completion Teacher teams helpful Builds teacher responsibility Time can be unproductive
Positive/Negative Double Blocking Positive Negative Additional time for learning taxonomies Teachers have to be engaging Can have positive effect on scores No guarantee of improved scores Extra time for intervention/extension Time can be unproductive
