News Media Accuracy and balance in reporting represent the essence of journalism in news media. The news media overwhelmingly see journalism as a watchdog against corruption and abuse and believe this effort keeps public officials from committing wrong. Maintaining some distance from the people they cover and keeping business out of the newsroom are more important for balance reporting.
Today, journalism is accountable to shareholders just like any other business. The news media are also concerned that pressure to attract audiences is pushing their industry too far in the direction of infotainment.
Business Pressures in News Media Increased concern about financial pressure is evident in both the print and television. In order to attract new audiences, the news media crosses the line between entertainment and news. Ownership of news organizations by diversified corporations had a negative effect on the profession. Advertising concerns play much of a role in news decisions.
Kinds of Business pressures Internal Pressures § Editors § Owners § Stakeholders External Pressures § Big companies-Advertisements § Government
Role of ownership in Internal Business Pressures There are basically two type of ownership that exist in Indian Media System. Vertical Ownership-Owning one particular kind of media. E. g. Print-the Hindu Group, the Hindu (Daily Newspaper), the Frontline(Weekly magazine), the Sports star(Sports magazine) Horizontal Ownership-Owning Different chains of media under one head. E. g. Ushodaya Enterprises, Eenadu newspaper, ETV, Chitfund company, Priya foods. Questions “Does owning all the possible media give full monopoly over information? Do you think it will affect the News content and the news media as a whole? ”
Business Pressures and Impact on News Media § Issues like thin line dividing editorial and advertisement content. § Sting journalism, reality show and propaganda. § Complaints of erosion of news. Vice President Hamid Ansari, referred to advertisement pages which are outnumbering the news pages and said “the distinction between the editorials and advertorials was very thin and pressures for accelerated reporting overtake the need for accurate reporting. ”
So how can a journalist tackle these pressures? § § News anchor and reporters should never deliver commercial messages. Station should insure that journalist merit and public service, not commercial interest, drive special projects. When an advertiser is in the news, journalist should apply the same standards of factual accuracy, contextual authenticity, aggressiveness and fairness as s/he would to all other news content. News director should build and sustain a high degree of communication, respect and trust among station leadership and staff members in all departments. News room should remain independent of the business association stations legitimately have with advertisers.
Points to ponder Does owning all the possible media give full monopoly over information? Do you think it will affect the News content and the news media as a whole? While catering to the business Pressures the Newspapers are bringing in more infotainments. Is that justifiable?
