1. What is integrity? wholeness Of what? A product conform to product specifications A system used for what it is meant A person doing what they said they would do Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011
2. Three approaches to integrity (Vandekerckhove 2010) What is right exists objectively (even without us knowing it) Integrity Person acting according to that principle objectivism subjectivism What is right differs from person to person Person acting on what they feel is right Integrity Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011
What is right? Speaking is a crucial element for integrity Act upon your judgement Speak about how what you do links with how you judge things Integrity is of importance BETWEEN people That is also where the benefits of integrity are felt Integrity leads to TRUST Crucial in business Inter-subjectivism Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011

3. integrity: keeping or honouring your word? Jensen (2009) Your word is: What you said What you know What is expected What you stand for What you say is so This is your word, not integrity Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011
Because situations, environments, conditions, and people change, it is not always possible to KEEP our word. Integrity requires us to HONOUR our word if we cannot keep it + + Say you will not be keeping your word Say you will keeping your word in the future (and when), or not at all Say what you will do to deal with the impact on others Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011

4. Seven causes of failing integrity Jensen (2009) 1. Integrity is a nice virtue (but not essential) 2. Self Deception about failing integrity (we see the reason or excuse, but are unaware that we have not kept our word) 3. Integrity is keeping one’s word (and if we can’t keep it we have to hide that) 4. Fear (of acknowledging you are not going to keep your word) 5. Integrity is not seen as a factor of production (so we make up false causes and unfounded rationalisations as sources of failure) 6. Not doing cost/benefit analysis on giving our word 7. Doing cost/benefit analysis on honouring our word Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011
5. Personal and Organisational integrity Vandekerckhove (2010) Integrity = wholeness of mind act word Person but are organisations persons? Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011
