1. What is ethics? • = reasoning about what we find ethical and unethical. • What is ethical/unethical? We ‘know’ when we see it in a situation • Discussing ethics = trying to make sense about why we ‘know’/ ‘feel’ something is (un)ethical • Ethical theory: attempts to give those discussions some foundation Wim Vandekerckhove - Business Ethics BUSI 1314 - University of Greenwich 2010 -2011 3

2. What is business ethics? • Different theories? • Business people / Ordinary people? • During work / After work? • Cf. Drucker ‘One ethics […] one code, that of individual behavior in which the same rules apply to everyone alike’ (Drucker 1981: 19) • Different situations because people enter specific relations through business organisation • Cf. (cont) • No ‘business ethics’, just ethics in the context of business/organisations • No ‘social responsibility’ overriding individual consciousness • People act, not systems or organisations. People act through organisations. • Two tiers of functions in society: 1. Of organisations 2. Coursework 1 3 exercises from tutorials • • Stakeholder interests (what is an organisation? ) Concepts and expectations (organisation as text) Actions and reasons (ethical theories) (3 x 500 words, 5 Nov. 3 pm) 2. Coursework 2 individual essay • • Analyse an ethical issue in an organisation from different positions and perspectives.
