Information about Italy • Italy is located in southern Europe and surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea • It is washed three seas • Italy is mostly mountainous country • The population is about 59, 5 million • The main religion in Italy – Catholicism • Italy is in the time zone of UTC+1
The features of the negotiations in Italy • Written forms of communication are preferred for a first approach • Meetings are often organized in an office after 10. 00 am or in the early afternoon • Be prepared for lengthy negotiations • Final decisions on negotiations is taken by the chairman • Italians give importance to verbal commitments and the final contract is certainly based on previous informal agreements.
Dining etiquette and table manners • It is common that business meetings end with an invitation to eat out • Usually, lunch begins after 1. 00 p. m. Dinner time is around 8. 00 p. m. • The most common way to begin lunch or dinner is “buon appetito” • To alert the waiter, try to make eye contact • The host always pays the bill
Women in business • Although women form a relatively high percentage of the total workforce, the number of women in senior management positions is quite small. Progress is being made on this front, but quite slowly in comparison with some other countries. • Women tend to have a higher profile in some family-owned companies where standing within the family is the key criteria for advancement. • Senior female managers from abroad will always be treated with respect and courtesy. Do not be surprised to be complimented on personal appearance, style etc. - it is seen as a 'gallant' thing to do.
