Built Workshop - Freight Automation Breakout Ambassador Bridge Friday, July 24, 2015 Automated Vehicle Symposium 2015 Transportation Research Board and Association of Unmanned Vehicles International Eagle Crest Marriott Hotel Detroit MI
Questions to answer • 1. What entities are supplying and demanding freight? What is the freight? • 2. What are the key origin and destination locations by type for freight? • 3. How might automated truck travel be introduced into the regional transportation network? What are the barriers to implementing truck platoons with passenger vehicles? How might these barriers be overcome? • 4. What impact will automated truck travel have on the roadway network and the specific physical sites?
1 a. What entities are supplying and demanding freight? • Assumptions & trends: – More on-line purchases, less brick & mortar (e. g. Amazon, Walmart, etc. ) – Centralized manufacturing vs. regional/local (e. g. 3 D printer tech at point-of-demand). – Automated truck platoons between Manufacturing and Distribution Hubs & between Hubs – UGV/UAV delivery to individual customers
1 b. What is the freight? • Assumptions & trends: – Potential to move from centralized to distributed manufacturing will change freight composition/ mix from more finished products to more raw materials. – Manufacture “On Demand” – Smaller trucks & less freight – related traffic Port/ Mine Central MFG Dist. Hub Local MFG Local (Store) Customer
Question 2: • What are the key origin-destination locations by type for freight?
3. How might automated truck travel be introduced into the region transportation network? • Trucks may be introduced into mixed traffic flow • Other options may keep truck separate from passenger car network including – Segregated Lanes (see right) – More intelligent use of rail network – Repurpose of former rail rights-of-way
How might these barriers be overcome? • Segregated Automated or Truck lanes • Education of drivers and regulators • Public/Private partnership for automated truckfriendly roadways
4. Automated truck travel and impact on the roadway network. • A mainline highspeed artery that would be merged into and exited at speed with automated precision merges and exits. • Would have denser feeder tributaries with all tolling or checks done here. • Separate automated lanes for trucks and cars. • Infrastructure components laid out along the automated roads. • There would be a control room for managing traffic at the freight offloading site.
4. Automated truck travel and impact on the roadway network.
