Today’s Data Grows, But Yesterday’s Data Compounds… For on-line storage you can expect to spend $7 managing your environment for every $1 you spend on the hardware itself Forrester Research “Surviving the Storage Boom”
80% or More of All Data Is Accessed Infrequently, or Not At All… Executive Needs (Decisions, Direction…) Infrastructure Needs (HR, Acct. Payroll…) Business Function Needs (Sales, MKT, MFG…) Legal Requirements (HIPPA, ISO, FCR…) The People / The Organization On-Line NAS (Centralized) WHERE DOES IT GO? IT MUST BE AVAILABLE! The IT Team Production Servers An automated policy engine that “differentiates current from historical data” for cost-effective data retention Near Line Libraries (Tape, DVD and MO}
What Are HSM Tiers? Tier 1 – Production Servers: Managed Server HSM Software reduces the production data sets, incrementally or by as much as 90%, while automating data management for the production environment. Tier 2 – Central Network Attached Storage (NAS): This is a Net. Ware server(s), implemented to house the majority of online available reference data. This tier dramatically improves production performance and data restoration while reducing network management 10 to 1 or more. Tier 3 – Near-line Libraries or Jukeboxes: Storage Server HSM Software enables the use of near-line storage for archiving. This further reduces network management, data management and the cost per/MB for data retention. MO, DVD and Tape media become the repository for long term data retention which reduces backup processes and on-line data sets. Tier 4 – Archive: Off-line archiving allows for the lowest cost per/MB storage and is the best resource for hardware-less data retention.
The Ability to Differentiate Data Production vs. Reference or Historical Data Group. Wise and Net. Ware Servers Production environment is stabilized, resources are available for future infrastructure requirements…
Reference Data Is Removed From Production Environments… Near-line Storage Differentiated data facilitates a plethora of new options for the infrastructure managers…
Four Focused Sales Opportunities… 1. Net. Ware 4. x Server Consolidation 2. Lower the Cost of SAN Implementations 3. Group. Wise Server Consolidation 4. Email Retention/Storage Management

Lower Network TCO: Multi—Tiered HSM gives you choices… 80% or more of all data is infrequently accessed or not accessed at all…. 1. Lost IT and User productivity due to storage management and data management activities - $34, 755 per server/ per year 2. Shortened hardware lifecycles and excessive server implementations to prevent storage/server overload - $14, 704 per server/ per year 3. Increasing backup and disaster recovery costs as well as growing business continuity losses should a server or network disaster occur - backup costs $6, 107 per 18 GB drive annually; restore costs $540 per 18 GB/ per hour; lost business costs $1000’s to $1, 000’s per hour/per event. 4. Constant reactive spending requirements—Today, most storage expenditures are used to maintain today’s infrastructure, rather than to transition into tomorrows…
Business Case Studies • Case Study 1—Bank of America Merchant Services 4 30+ Net. Ware servers (local and remote), with regular “out of space” issues and crashes (3 -4 incidents a week). 4 Multi-tiered HSM eliminated the emergencies; managed the available space keeping sufficient free space to maintain server efficiency; reduced server management over 10 to 1.
Business Case Studies (cont. ) • Case Study 2 – Brigham Young University 4 Needed a better method to store video files generated every semester as on-line course introductions. They could not be deleted as they were regularly, but not frequently, reused or referenced as templates for future classes. This data growth was causing frequent storage issues as well challenging their backup processes. 4 Multi-tiered HSM the transparent migration and recalling of the video files onto near-line storage for lower cost, lower maintenance storage. In addition, it was used to manage other volumes and other servers in the environment for a better ROI.
