The Community Based Work Experience Programs (CBWEP) of Brushton-Moira & St. Regis Falls Central School Districts are designed to give students an opportunity to develop job readiness skills in the world of work, with the necessary supports for them to be successful. The goal of the program is to offer community based instruction aimed at building a student’s resume of skills that will lead to successful employment and independence in adult living, learning, and earning. 3
Beginning of the Year Student Assessment Program staff meets with students to determine student’s goals Fill out job assessment questionnaire and Career Plan Discuss objectives of program and how long-term goals will be addressed Discuss expectations of program for student, and the student’s expectations of program Discuss financial literacy component 4

Student Worksite Placement Freshman/Sophomore Level • • • Start off on work crews with other classmates Has support of staff for the entire duration of the job Learn basic job and social skills Learn to be a team player Works days and times vary according to daily schedule; typically 2 to 3 days out of a 6 day cycle Junior/Senior Level • • Work on independent job sites Staff makes weekly visits to job site Applies basic job and social skills Learns the trade of the business Develops an employment portfolio Learns about local and state community agencies Work days and times vary according to daily schedule; typically works as many days as possible 6

Financial Literacy Component In order to promote the acquisition of financial literacy in the students involved in the program, all students will receive a pretend “paycheck” for being involved in the program. Students will not receive real money to participate in the program. The “paycheck” will be a pretend check made out to the student. The student will then “cash” their check and be paid in Panther Dollars. Once they receive their Panther Dollars the student will need to pay “bills” (outlined below). With their remaining Panther Dollars, they can buy merchandise in the Brushton. Moira Central School Work Experience Store or create a savings account to save up for larger items. Panther Dollars are only redeemable at the Brushton-Moira Work Experience Store. Students will be “paid” at the rate of $2. 00 Panther Dollars for each hour they work. At the end of a two week period, students will receive their paycheck for the total of hours worked. On the 1 st of every month, the following “bills” are due: Monthly Bills (Due the 1 st of each month) Rent: $10. 00 per month Car/Insurance $5. 00 per month Utilities $3. 00 per month Groceries $3. 00 per month Entertainment/ Clothes $3. 00 per month Students will need to calculate their own bills and will be encouraged to do so as independently as possible. With the remaining money, students will be able to “buy” merchandise in the Work Experience Store. The merchandise will vary from month to month. 10

Student Expectations • To be respectful, responsible, and reliable • If the student is unable to attend his/her worksite, they call in to their place of employment to let them know they will not be there • Follow worksite rules, regulations, and policies. • Be honest, punctual, cooperative, and courteous to all people on the worksite. • Work to the best of their ability while on a worksite. • Keep regular attendance at school and on the job. • Complete assignments and homework, maintaining passing grades. • Give advance notice if they are unable to report to placement. • Give a minimum of 2 week notice if planning on terminating the work site. • Report any injuries that occur while on placement. 13
Student Grades Students will be given a weekly grade, progress report grade, and a quarterly and final grade. Students will be graded on the following • All paperwork and classroom assignments • Job performance will be assessed through a weekly evaluations 14
Looking Ahead • Plan field trips to local community agencies – 911 Call Center, Fire Station, Police Station, One Work Source. • Students will participate in mock interviews. • Open school store. Students will do a business plan, set up and run the store. • Participate in public transportation. 15
End of the Year Reception This reception is to acknowledge employers, students, parents, and educational staff for their positive participation and dedication to the program. The Community Based Work Experience Program would not be a success without a team effort from both the school and local communities. 16
