The Birmingham accent or BRUMMIE The Brummie is an example of regional accent of English It is not the only accent of the West Midlands although the term Brummie is often used in referring to all accents of the region. Brummie is often hardly to distinguish from Black Country accents. The phonetician John Wells has admitted that he cannot tell any difference between the accents. A lot of celebrities speak Brummy, for example Ozzy Osbourne
The most despised one — 'Social snobbery' Of all the dialects spoken in the British Isles, however, the one which seems to attract the most scorn is that spoken in and around the city of Birmigham - 'loutish, ” “thuggish, ” “thievish” "Brummagem screwdriver" or "Brummie screwdriver" is UK slang for a hammer. Lydia Stockdale commented on advertisers' association of Birmingham accents with pigs What seems to irritate the hell out of everyone is simply the sound of the thing.
Intonation A peculiarity of the Brummie accent is the use of a downward intonation at the end of most sentences. This means lowering the pitch of the voice and allowing the sound simply to fade away. In Brummie, the lowering suggests despondency and makes it less attractive to the listener.
Vowels RP Brummie example /ai/ /oi/ Oy kwoyt loik it (I quite like it) /əʊ/ /au/ goat /Æu/ mouth /a: / /æ/ star /i/ /i: / pin /ʌ/ /u/ Hut, strut /æ/ /a/ trap /ɔr/ /ʌʊə/ force
Consonants Brummie employs a mild form of the stereotypical Spanish /r/. Not every written 'r' is articulated. Here, the Birmingham accent mirrors RP quite closely. With a word like 'Centre', the 'r' sound is completely ignored. the 'g' in an 'ng' formation is over-articulated. At the end of a word, or when followed by a vowel, it is effectively pronounced twice. H's are dropped wherever they occur, except when emphasis is required. T's are occasionally omitted from the end of words.
Vocabulary Babby Variation of "baby" Bawlin, Bawl To cry, as in "She started to baw' Snap Food, a meal, allegedly derived from the act of eating itself (example usage "I'm off to get my snap" equates to "I'm leaving to get my dinner").
