British Standard Code of Practice for Audio-Frequency-Inductive. Loop-Systems (AFILS) BS 7594 John Woodgate J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 1
Standards and Codes of Practice All technological systems need defined performance characteristics n Designers of loop systems: International standard IEC 60118 -4: 2006 n Owners and operators of loop systems: British Standard Code of Practice for AFILS (BS 7594: 1993, under revision) J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 2
British Standard Code of Practice for AFILS (BS 7594) n Survey of London theatres by RNID in 1985 n n n Most had no assistive listening system or no working system Demonstrated the need for a code of practice RNID asked British Standards Institution (BSI) to develop a Code of Practice for AFILS n BS 7594 first published in 1993 J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 3
BS 7594 Revised n n n Revision to be published this year (2011) BS 7594: 1993 was re-confirmed in 1998, but the 2006 revision of IEC 60118 -4 prompted the revision of BS 7594; May be offered to IEC as an IEC Technical Report J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 4
Structure of BS 7594 effectively has two parts: 1. Review of the technical basis of AFILS design n 2. Incorrect information had caused problems Detailed guidance for owners and operators n How to ensure the system is well-designed n How to keep it working n Signage and communication This presentation will focus on the 2 nd part J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 5
Overview of non-technical Sections n Purchasers: Sections 1 and 2 n Owners and operators: Sections 6 and 7 n Hearing aid users: Section 6 J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 6
For purchasers n What is an audio-frequency induction-loop system (AFILS)? n Advantages and limitations n The need for specialist advice n The need to comply with performance standards J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 7
Signage n n n Symbols for technical and architectural drawings Sign for the presence of an AFILS (the ‘crossed-ear and T’ sign) Sign for listening areas not covered by the AFILS (the same sign with a diagonal black bar) J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 8
AFILS present sign J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 9
No AFILS coverage sign J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 10
How to obtain a well-designed AFILS n n Check with an expert that an AFILS is what is needed! Have the site assessed for: adverse conditions, such as large metal structures, moveable tiered seating, etc. n unusual extra costs (e. g. due to protected architectural features) n J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 11
How to find an expert n Independent consultant n System manufacturer n Installation contractor (small systems) n Contact details in UK for these from: Institute of Sound and Communications Engineers: info@isce. org. uk J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 12
Contract n BS 7594 recommends a contract to define the requirements and responsibilities of the parties n n Possible exception: small systems Contracts can prevent endless costly problems at later stage Contract should specify the ‘sign-off’ criteria after the system has been commissioned The new BS 7594 includes model ‘sign-off’ certificates to facilitate this J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 13
Information and recommendations for owners and operators n Provide information to staff and hearingaid users. (Common failing!) In addition to signage, leaflet should be provided to give details for hearing-aid users n n Train operators and staff Check the system often and regularly especially in multi-purpose spaces J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 14
Monitor receiver n BS 7594 recommends a fixed monitor receiver n n n Like a loop listener but with a button to activate a small loudspeaker Fixed on the wall; preferably accessible to all, not only staff Simple and inexpensive device but unfortunately not commercially available n If available and provided, anyone would be able to check the system easily J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 15
Prototype Monitor receiver J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 16
Prototype Monitor receiver 2 J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 17
Utilization of BS 7594 n n n Main problem in UK is non-working systems due to poor installation skills BSI reports BS 7594 is a best seller; bought by designers and skilled installers Loop advocates chant ‘IEC 60118 -4 and BS 7594’ almost like a mantra J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 18
How to make improvements using BS 7954 n n Publicize IEC 60118 -4 and BS 7594 (the upcoming revised edition); Support training for loop installers and electricians; Introduce a certification scheme (not a simple or low-cost task) DANGER! A ‘certifiction’ scheme! J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 19
How to obtain BS 7594 n n n http: //shop. bsigroup. com/ Buying elsewhere unlikely to be cheaper: be sure you don’t buy an older version Most of the 1993 edition of BS 7594 is still valid, but the new edition will be available later this year (2011) J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 20
How to obtain IEC/EN 60118 -4 n n IEC 60118 -4 adopted by CENELEC (European standards body) English versions of 60118 -4 are sold by: n n n IEC (www. iec. ch) standards bodies of EU countries List of standards bodies is at: http: //en. wikipedia. org/wiki/Standards_organization J M Woodgate and Associates RAYLEIGH UK 21
