History The first time Brighton was as a Saxon settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086. Much of the old fishing village was destroyed when French raiders set fire to the wooden buildings in 1514. The only building that survived was a part of St Nicholas Church and fishermen's cottages in The Lanes. It was a typical coastal settlement until the Prince Regent, later King George IV, built the Royal Pavilion as a royal seaside residence in the 1780s.
History Brighton developed into a fashionable health resort for sea bathing. The arrival of the railway in 1841 made Brighton very accessible from London. During the Victorian period, many grand hotels and attractions were built including the Grand Hotel and several piers. Hove was also a fishing village between the 16th and 18th centuries.
Royal Pavillion In 1783 prince George fell in love with a Roman Catholic lady whose name was Maria Anne Fitzherbert, whose previous two husbands had both died. He secretly married her in London, but this was illegal because he had not received permission from his father. George bought a house for Mrs Fitzgerald in Brighton and would often come down to Brighton from London to escape from his father and to see his mistress. At first he stayed in a farmhouse nearby, but later he took over the property and started to transform it.
Pier Brighton Pier opened for the first time in 1899. It is 525 metres long. There are food and other stalls, bars, an amusement arcade and, at the far end, a place where you can enjoy several different funfair rides. The pier is open throughout the year for most of the day - the latest opening times are during the summer and at weekends. Admission is free, and there are some seats which you can use without charge.
Beach The beach at Brighton is shingle (small stones), not sand. Along the sea front there are a range of shops, cafés, restaurants, bars and clubs. Some artists sell their paintings here, and there is also a small fishing museum.
