Brazilian people are amazingly diverse and vibrant from their origin to their lifestyles. They're generous to a fault and very friendly, even to strangers.
Conversation • Don't be surprised if you're speaking with a Brazilian and they enter your personal space or tend to touch your arm, shoulder, or hand when talking with you • The people of Brazil are comfortable with spirituality and talk openly about spiritual things, unlike many other cultures • Men shake hands in greeting, and eye contact is very important. • Women greet each other with kisses on both cheeks, beginning with the left. • If a woman wishes to shake hands with a man, she should extend her hand first.
Business • Business people in Brazil prefer face-to-face contact rather than the impersonal e-mail or phone call. Most times, they won't do business with someone they've never met or don't trust. • The individual they deal with is more important than the company. • Business cards are exchanged during introductions with everyone at a meeting. • Business appointments are required and can often be scheduled on short notice; however, it is best to make them 2 to 3 weeks in advance. • Meetings are generally rather informal. • Expect to be interrupted while you are speaking or making a presentation.
Dining • These people are some of the most generous and friendly people you have ever encountered. Even in the poorest of homes, where it is clear that people hardly had any food at all to eat in their homes, I would be invited to visit and share a meal. • Brazilians will usually use a fork and knife for pizza, sandwiches, and even chicken. They are surprised and amused at the American way of eating such foods with their hands. • As a rule, Brazilians do not eat while walking down the street or while riding the bus or the subway.
Leisure • It's not unusual to meet someone in Brazil and be invited to his or her home for refreshments. • Brazilians love color, parties, and celebrations. They're always available for times of celebration with family, food, music, dancing, and fun. • If you are invited to a home for dinner, bring the hostess flowers or even a small gift. Orchids are considered a very nice gift, but avoid purple ones. • Avoid giving anything purple or black as these are mourning colors. • Gifts are opened when received. • Do not worry about punctuality. In fact, it is customary to arrive at least ½ late to a dinner. • Brazilians dress with a flair and judge others on their appearance.
