Working in Collaboration Notions of Narrative 4 FTC 1059
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the potential and possibilities in working collaboratively within fine art practice, to include performance, video, site responsive works and perhaps temporary installations. Students will attend a series of short presentations and practical workshops focused on both the contextual and practical issues of collaborative practice.
Students will reflect on their particular disposition/expectations in relation to how they operate in a group and through group work, gain an understanding of the importance of creative exchange, articulation of ideas, negotiation skills and methods of formulating ideas through dialogue.
All students will be expected to equally contribute to the division and delegation of tasks, the management of roles and the overall coordination of a creative undertaking.
Collaboration • • • Working together Sharing ideas and information Expanding potential Sharing knowledge and skills Bringing together diverging concerns and ideas to widen dialogue • Negotiation of development
Collaboration • Sharing research methods and methodologies • Deeper brainstorming • The submerging of individual ego • Self awareness • Time management • Open focus (not just individual’s own work)
Collaboration • Unification of ideas / ideals / concerns • Opposites of ideas to create a tension in the work
Collaborators !!! • Bob and Roberta Smith / Jane and Louise Wilson / The Atlas Group / Tim Noble and Sue Webster / Ilya and Emilia Kabokov / Art and Language / Tracy Emin and Sarah Lucas / Langlands and Bell / Jake and Dinos Chapman / Christo and Jean Claude / Gilbert and George / Henry Bond and Liam Gillick …
The Plan… • You will work as part of a team • As a team, you will brainstorm and then research the given topic/theme • You will then work towards producing a response within the time allocated • You will ALL take joint responsibility for certain tasks • You will evaluate the performance of each member of the team
The Plan cont… • You will all record your input via the forms provided • At the end of the project you will present the work made to staff and other teams via seminar • That seminar will be documented via hard copy • You will exhibit the work publicly and organize a ‘ Screening Evening’
THEME • Produce an approximately 5 minute film as a group that sets out visually your collective understanding and interpretation of the term Narrative • You should use the medium (video and editing) to skillfully explore your theme • You should not make a ‘pop’ video • Your focus is ‘art’
Submission details • The finished film • The seminar presentation that justifies your action (hard copy) • Your action plans and diary sheets (that detail how 115 hours of independent study have been used) • Notes from lectures • Evidence of research (Sketchbooks/Research File) • Tutorial reports • Peer assessment
Rules • All members of each group are fully accountable and responsible to each other • Any member of any group may be dismissed for laziness / stubbornness / absence etc. This would mean you were unable to complete the task and therefore fail the module
INITIAL RESEARCH TASK • Look at some of the artists suggested • Extensive research into the many ideas of ‘narrative’ • Start and develop a new combined Sketchbook/Research File
‘Sometimes we will hit the target but miss the self. At other times we will miss the target but hit the self. Our purpose, though, is to hit the target as the self and hope that the sharp sound of arrow penetrating paper will awaken us from the dream of life. ’ - Hideharu Onuma
