Introduction • PNG Forest Research Institute is a Directorate of PNG Forest Authority • PNGFRI has four (4) Programs which the PNG National Herbarium or LAE Herbarium is under the Forest Biology Program • LAE Herbarium contain almost 300 000 to 400 000 dried specimens of PNG and Non-PNG plants of which 2000 are TYPE specimens • Covering almost 19 000 recorded species (Unpublished, 2017) in PNG • LAE Herbarium Database about 5 -10% of specimen records into PNG Plant Database, (www. pngplant. org) • PNG Plant Database is hosted by NSW Herbaria (Collaborating Partner) • Project Collaborating Partners are PNG University Herbarium & The University of Technology Herbarium
Project Goals 1. Establish or strengthen National Biodiversity Information 2. Increase available biodiversity data, within and beyond the grant period 3. Apply biodiversity data in response to National priorities
Deliverables Goal 1: Establish or strengthen National Biodiversity Information Technical support to LAE, UPNG and UOT herbaria Engage database personnel and purchase desktop computers for data entry for each institution Linkage between institutional datasets Set up between UPNG herbarium and LAE, and LAE and UOT herbarium Establish a database for UOT Herbarium Set a database for UOT herbarium Data management protocols Inception meeting, two mid term reviews, end of project meeting
Deliverables Goal 2: Increase available biodiversity data, within and beyond the grant period Guide to accessing data from plant Document a guide to accessing and usage of databases and information within the datasets for the public 50 -60% increase in data recorded into the database Electronic images of specimens Enter information from field labels on specimens into the database Take photographs of specimens Geo-referencing of specimens in LAE, UOT, UPNG Herbaria
Deliverables Goal 3: Apply biodiversity data in response to National priorities Distribution maps of selected taxa from Develop maps of selected species from datasets protected areas and for conservation and map out their distributions needs Checklist of taxa from 5 selected managed forest areas Generate plant checklists and make it available to the public
Work Plan (1 -3 Months) 1. • • Mobilization Recruiting Staff Set-up work Station Access to Local Network Consult UPNG, UOT, NSW Herbaria deliver • Budgeting Deliverables Staff are working on the project Work area resourced Having stations connected to FRI Network Agreed on expected approach to expected outputs Funds transfer to UPNG & UOT
