The Righteousness of God
Romans Doctrinal Prologue 1: 17 12: 1 Life by Faith Obedience of Faith (1: 5) Practical Epilogue 15: 14 Service by Faith Righteousness of God Revealed Obedience of Faith (16: 26)
I am not ashamed of the gospel… • • It is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. In it the righteousness of God is revealed. How is the righteousness of God revealed in the gospel? 1) In God’s judging: a) Pagans who rejected Him (Ch. 1) b) Jews who disobeyed Him (Ch. 2) c) All men who have sinned against Him (Ch. 3)
The Righteousness of God is revealed… 2) In the grace of God toward those who believe : a) b) In reckoning men as righteous by crediting them with the righteousness of Christ (Ch. 4) In declaring men to be righteous on the basis of the reckoning described in the previous chapter (Ch. 5) What about sin? – – c) Can we continue to live in sin? (Ch. 6) What about the sin that is still in our lives? (Ch. 7) In adopting us as His children (Ch. 8)
What about Israel? How can we see God as righteous when His own chosen people do not believe and receive His promises? • • • Not all Israel is Israel. God is sovereign and able to chose whom He wills. Salvation is offered to all who believe. Israel’s unbelief has resulted in blessings to the Gentiles. All Israel will be saved.

Unbeliever Believer Sees the message of the cross as foolishness. Sees the message of the cross as the power of God. Those who are perishing (1: 18). Those who are being saved (1: 18). Tried to come to know God through his wisdom (1: 21). Came to know God by the preaching of the cross (1: 21). The Jews ask for a sign and the Greeks search for wisdom (1: 22). But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness (1: 23). The wisdom of men (2: 5). The wisdom of God (2: 5). We have not received the spirit of the world (2: 12). We have received the spirit of God (2: 12). The natural man does not accept the things But he who is spiritual appraises all things of the Spirit of God (2: 14). (2: 15). And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men… (3: 1) …but as to men of flesh, as to babes in Christ. (3: 1). I gave you milk to drink… (3: 2) …not solid food (3: 2)
What is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, even as the Lord gave opportunity to each one (3: 5) Paul Planted Apollos Watered God was causing the growth (3: 5)

Christians in Corinth (Ch. 7) Those who felt it was wrong to eat They did not eat, but were troubled by those who did They ate in spite of thinking it was wrong and their conscience was troubled Those who felt it was okay to eat They ate without regard to the feelings of others They limited their liberty from concern for other brothers
8: 1 9: 15 A call to limit liberty for the sake of the weaker brother An example of this type of limited liberty seen in Paul’s limitation of his liberty to be paid in the ministry Paul has the right Paul has limited his to be paid in liberty for the sake of the ministry Corinthians
