Biathlon
Biathlon is any sporting event made up of two disciplines. However, biathlon usually refers specifically to the winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Other popular variants include summer biathlon, which combines cross-country running with rifle, and biathle (also known as "modern biathlon"), which combines running with swimming.
History This sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldiers, as an alternative training for the military. One of the world's first known ski clubs, the Trysil Rifle and Ski Club, was formed in Norway in 1861 to promote national defense at the local level.
Spread and popularity • Biathlon is popular especially in the countries of Northern, Central and Eastern Europe, including in Russia. The most successful countries for the whole history of biathlon are Russia (USSR), GDR, Germany, Norway. Increased noticeably biathlon has also in France, Austria, Belarus, Sweden, Ukraine, China and North America. A marked increase in popularity as the results, biathlon is observed in the countries of Eastern Europe. Only in international competitions athletes from 43 countries (as of 2013). Members of the International biathlon Union Federation are from 68 countries.
