Safety and Hazards
Hazard - source of danger Why is safety and hazard avoidance in the workplace important? What are the consequences of injuries in the workplace?
Maintaining Safety in the Workplace 1. Safety Education - workers are trained in safe practices for their job - safety and health programs are put in place
2. Safety Equipment - glasses or goggles, ear plugs, gloves, hard hats - safety engineering designing machines and processes to be safer and to avoid hazards
3. Encouragement – incentives, ongoing safety programs 4. Enforcement – making sure safety precautions are followed
Safety and Health Programs: - provides a safe work environment - informs the employees - recognizes, evaluates, and controls hazards - regulated by OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Types of Hazards: 1. Mechanical - result from rollers, gearing, belts, chains, power sources, etc. - controllable with guards, lockout devices (for power), personal protective gear (safety glasses)
2. Material Handling - heavy, sharp, or toxic materials - utilize proper lifting techniques
3. Chemical - can cause burns, reactions, breathing problems, fire, death - know what you are dealing with - wear personal protection gear - dispose of properly HAZMAT - hazardous material
MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheet MSDS Sheets Contain: - flammability and reactivity data - medical and health hazards - exposure limits - spill procedures - personal protection information
4. Fire - could result from chemicals, paper waste, inks - keep chemicals properly contained - properly clean and dispose of waste
5. Noise - hearing loss from excessive noise - wear personal protective gear Decibel - unit used to measure sound
6. Light - UV (ultraviolet) and IR (infrared) can damage skin and eyes - wear personal protective gear, cover the light source 7. Ergonomic - fitting physical characteristics of a job to the physical characteristics of the worker
8. Environmental - covers damages to the environment - regulated by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) because of the 1990 CAAA (Clean Air Act Amendments)
Safety Audit - periodic safety inspections - ensures procedures are being followed Who performs the safety audits? - in house - local enforcement - federal enforcement (OSHA)
OSHA - Occupational Safety and Health Administration - a federal agency
