Why a Middle School Orientation? • The move from elementary school to middle school can be a time of stress. There are new teachers, a different curriculum, time management problems to negotiate, extra homework, new forms of grades, evaluations and assessments. • The stresses created by these transitions can be minimized when the new environment is responsive to each particular age group.

What the research says… The level of academic achievement that students attain by eighth grade has a larger impact on their college and career readiness than anything that happens academically in high school. Academics • Each student is expected to put forth their best effort and demonstrate a positive attitude toward all academic matters. • Students receive regular praise and positive acknowledgement for good work, behavior, achievements, and improvement.
Academics • A student’s academic grade is based on the full extent of the work done throughout the trimester. • Class work, homework, participation, performance tasks, tests and quizzes, projects, and exam grades are all calculated to arrive at a cumulative grade at the end of the trimester. • The percentage given to each category will be determined by the individual departments or subjects.
Assessment • Student evaluation and assessment takes different forms as it is an ongoing process. • It takes both formative and summative forms and is not limited to exams. • Rubrics are used for grading of oral work, presentations, performance tasks, projects, and group work.
Assessments • Performance Assessments: Like projects, presentations, or experiments. • Test- based Assessments: Like writing, responses, critiques, quizzes, tests. • Ministry Tests: Are held according to ministry approved intervals of time. • Trimester Tests: Starting grade 5, at the end of every trimester.
Grading System • A (Excellent) 90 -100 • B (Good) 80 -89 • C (Fair) 70 -79 • D (Poor) 60 -69 • F (not passing) below 60
Homework • Bedayia International School aims at maintaining high academic standards and expects students to take an active role in their learning and be accountable and responsible. • Students are expected to do their homework daily and avoid plagiarism. • Students stay after school, on Thursday, in case of repetitive attitude of undone homework.
Supporting Academics • Teachers prepare an action plan to support below level students during school hours in coordination with his/ her parents. • Our reading teacher works on enhancing students’ fluency and literal and inferential skills. • Head of Departments follow up on the plan to ensure students’ progress in the intervention program.

for ips ts T ren Pa Supporting Academic Behaviors • Ensure that your child has the materials and place to study at home. • Set a regular time for homework. • Encourage your child to be responsible for chores and homework. • Provide your child with a range of experiences to allow him/her to identify areas of strength. • Talk to your child.
Means of Communication • Contact the Middle School office assistant to set appointments. • Send a message to teachers or principal through the Home Connection. • The school is working on fully utilizing the Ren-Web on-line program for interaction with parents and reporting of student progress.
Rooms not Classes • Students will no longer stay in a homeroom class. They will move to subject classes. • Students need to develop independency skills. • Students will stop at their lockers according to assigned times. • Students are responsible to bring combination locks or keys and remember to bring the key daily to school. • In case they forget the key, the lock will be broken and you need to get another one.
Junk Food • A student’s good health helps improve his/her daily effort and concentration. • Food with a high percentage of sugar like fizzy drinks, candies, candy bars, and chips is forbidden at school.
Keep Valuables at Home
Read The Handbook • Students who are about to enter middle school have plenty of questions, and many of them will be answered when they read the school's handbook. • Parents should look through the handbook with their children and talk about such items as rules of conduct and punctuality regulations. • Both students and parents should sign the Handbook Contact and return it to the homeroom teacher within one week of the start of school.
