Baranova Marina, 11 form Project Work «Reading Shakespeare» Tutor: Timokhina Elena Evgenievna
I like to read very much I prefer romantic novels about people and love. I haven't read W. Shakespeare’s plays in Russian but I've seen the play “Romeo and Juliet” in theatre
William Shakespeare (baptised 26 April 1564 Ð 23 April 1616)[a] was an English poet and playwright, now widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's famous dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon" (or simply "The Bard"). His works consist of 38 plays Romeo and Juliet is an early tragedy by William Shakespeare about two teenage "star-cross'd lovers" whose "untimely deaths" ultimately unite their feuding families.
Sampson and Gregory, servants to the Capulets and Abraham and Balthasar, servants to the Montague family start a street fight, which is joined by Benvolio (Montague) and Tybalt (Capulet).
Escalus, the Prince of Verona who angrily learns of this fight, declares a death penalty for further feuding between the two families.
At the Capulet's party, Romeo who is disguised by a masque (mask), falls in love with Juliet on sight
«O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night Like a rich jewel in an Ethiope's ear; Beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear!»
Friar Laurence agrees to marry the two since he hopes this marriage it will end the long running Montague / Capulet feud
Romeo learns of the banishment order, realizing he will not be able to see Juliet again. Friar Laurence suggests Romeo go to Juliet's bed chamber to comfort his wife. . .
Romeo catches up with his friends Mercutio and Benvolio. Juliet's messenger, the Nurse, arrives and the wedding is set for later that day. The Nurse brings Romeo "cords" or ropes which will allow Romeo to climb into Juliet's bedchamber as her husband later that night. .
«I hear some noise within; dear love, adieu! Anon, good nurse! Sweet Montague, be true. Stay but a little, I will come again» .
«O Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love, And I'll no longer be a Capulet» .
«Farewell! God knows when we shall meet again. I have a faint cold fear thrills through my veins, That almost freezes up the heat of life: I must be gone and live, or stay and die»
«O comfortable friar! where is my lord? I do remember well where I should be, And there I am. Where is my Romeo? »
«The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head: Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things: Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished For never was a story of more woe Than this of Juliet and her Romeo» .
People must know the story about “Romeo and Juliet”because they teach us to love. It is the example of high love. It is very popular with young people.
How I work: I chose a topic that interested me First, I read about the topic in Russian for necessary background information. I watched the play in theatre. After that worked with English texts only (that's easier than translating the document in the end). I took short notes only from the English texts, then made my own sentences. I collected general information on the topic: biography, text and poetry. I illustrated them with the pictures and photos. I wrote the conclusion: "How does the play "Romeo and Juliet influence our lives? ".
