Large Block Size Performance Improvements - Configuration • Larger backup block sizes are now available from the Configuration tab of the Drive Properties page • Larger block sizes depend on the capability of the tape device and the HBA. The pull down list is dynamically restricted based on the smallest of the two • Block size is also restricted to a maximum of 1 MB • LTO 3 and LTO 4 will see biggest benefit • Some HBAs (such as Adaptec U 320) are known not to work correctly with > 64 K transfers; for those we will not allow larger block sizes • Some HBAs will require configuration change, Maximum. SGList, and a reboot to work with > 64 K transfers. Consult HBA OEM documentation for specifics 40
LTO 3 / LTO 4 Large Block Size Performance Improvement Testing • According to at least one tape drive OEM, better performance can be achieved with later model LTO drives by using block sizes above 64 K • Some testing in Symantec’s c. Lab showed little performance improvement unless the data is highly compressible • Some internal testing of “real world” production backups showed positive performance improvements: 312 GB job went from 1030 MB/Min using a 64 K block size to 1650 MB/Min using 512 K block size with 1 M buffer size • Your results are dependent on several factors 41
