How to describe paintings? Improvisation 28 by Vassiliy Kandinsky Personally, I think this painting is good. It's got very strong lines and you can almost feel the music. And the colours are great – they're really bright and agitated, in other words I can see splashes of colours! I like abstract paintings because you have to use your own imagination to understand what the painter is trying to do.
Guernica by Pablo Picasso In his war piece Picasso shows the horrors of war really well – with the dark, depressing colours and the terrible images. The lines and shapes are square and geometrical. They show violence and pain. Look at the horse and the mother with her dead child. It's a very frightening painting I think…
Claude Monet “Impression. Sunrise.” The name of the movement “IMPRESSIONISM” is derived from the title of a Claude Monet work, Impression. Sunrise. (Impression, soleil levant). Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, the inclusion of movement as an element of human perception and experience, unusual visual angles.
