First and second time mention So, when we mention something for the first time, we use a/an with singular or uncountable nouns. (I saw a news report, it was about a criminal/ there are criminals in prison) We use the to talk about something we already know. (the criminal committed murder)
Something unique The judge in court read the jury’s verdict.
So, We use THE to talk about something unique, or something we already know of. The judge read the verdict. Use THE when it is obvious what exactly we are talking about. (not just one of many, but the EXACT one) The Eiffel tower (there is only one) The bus stop near my house (there is only one bus stop)

General statements ____ Lawyers are usually clever people.
So, We use no article in general statements. Life, in general, is good. Lawyers are usually (generally) clever.
