Arctic Ocean Sciences Board report to the Pacific Arctic Group
Programs AOSB has a number of programs underway. – Implementation of i. AOOS – Implementation of ICARP II science plans through the ICARP II Marine Roundtable – Support for a new paleooceanography initiative – Launching of the New Research Generation initiative
i. AOOS • Report on the 2007 season completed. • Plan for 2008 season report • Possibly we will have a scientific workshop to look at results from the IPY.
ICARP II Roundtable • Dr. Bernie Coakley is chairing a group to evaluate the work already underway from ICARP II and to set priorities to ensure that recommendations from ICARP II are implemented. • Jackie Grebmeier and Jingping Zhao are on the Roundtable. • Focus is on the plans of WGs 3, 4 and 5: Shelves, Margins and Basins and Deep Central Basin.
Paleo-Oceanography Initiative • AOSB is supporting an effort to build the • • • basis for a sustained campaign of scientific drilling in the Arctic Ocean. A workshop was held in February 2008 to begin the planning process. Funding from IODP, AOSB and others is now available to hold a workshop at AWI in November 2008. The workshop is entitled: “Arctic Ocean Drilling: From speculation to reality. ”
NRG • New small fund to support the participation of early career scientists and engineers in the planning process. • The desire is to expand this with the help from other organizations, like PAG and IASC, to increase the level of support and to make this a significant and coordinated effort.
Arctic Science Community Reorganization • AOSB supports the IASC reorganization. • AOSB is working with IASC to identify AOSB as the Scientific Steering Group for Marine Science. • AOSB will meet later this week and will discuss the transition which we hope will take place over the next year.

ASSW 2009 • Three-day scientific meeting • Plenary sessions and concurrent science sessions where science papers will be presented. • Effort to include young scientists will be significant. • The science meeting will be followed by two day of meetings of executive committees of various ASSW organizations.
ASSW 2009 • Themes under discussion include: – Consequences of Globalization on the Arctic – Consequences of climate change in the Arctic and global impacts Web site is up and will be announced on Project Day.
