Archways National Conference September 2009
How did we begin? • Archways’ development was organic and based on need within a disadvantaged community • Area covered by the Clondalkin Partnership • Evidence of child and youth dissatisfaction • Increasing levels of anti-social behaviour • Significant minority not benefitting from educational supports • 60% non-completion to senior second level • Reason: We were unsure. We had done a lot of work on supporting improved attendance across 9 schools over a 3 year period • 20% of participants did not benefit from the range of supports offered
First steps – ‘In Trouble from Day One’ • Move from thought to action needed • • First step Recognised that an intervention for these children was required Second step Examined a series of possible intervention programmes Third step Tailoring – the realisation that any programme needed to be proven and specific to the needs of children experiencing SEBD Fourth step Criteria - needed programmes to have: • proven cost/benefit • research base • capable of being delivered in community settings
Selecting The Incredible Years: The Incredible Years (IY) programme was selected: • Applied in the community as opposed to clinical settings • Allowed for community buy in. • Could be delivered by various bodies through a range of individuals with different backgrounds and experiences • Allows for cohesion amongst all child services – One Message • Tiered - providing training inputs for parents, teachers and children • Flexible programme • Prevention and intervention strategies • World-wide evidence base
Archways established: • Programme successfully piloted in Clondalkin • Interest generated from Atlantic Philanthropies, the HSE, Dept of Education & Science • Funding accessed • Introduced into multiple sites • Irish evaluation of programme conducted • RCT evaluation • Multiple sites • Over 150 families • 11 schools
What We Do • Facilitate the mainstream delivery of evidence based prevention and intervention programmes for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties (SEBD) • Work closely with other service providers as well as parents, carers and teachers to provide these services • Specific focus on getting the service to children, early and within their own community setting • Our ethos is that the family is the most suitable and effective mechanism for behavioural change. When coupled with complementary school based components creates real & proven opportunity for change.
Services we offer include • • Direct programme delivery to target groups Training of trainers Programme support to service providers Quality assurance regarding programme delivery and fidelity • Support implementation issues
Research • Management of significant research projects • Promotion and dissemination of relevant Irish and international findings • Completion of programme specific research projects • Evaluation of other potential programmes for delivery by Archways
Advocacy • Provide a voice for families with children experiencing SEBD • Establish and support parent Networks • Form coalitions amongst service providers and stakeholders • Build the capacity of stakeholders such as local organisations and communities to self advocate • Contribute to and influence future SEBD related policy by promoting awareness of the issue and the programmes that tackle it
Where do we go from here Service Provision • Develop new sites • Provide Peer Coaching • Organise Training for Trainers • Support Group Leaders through the accreditation process
Where do we go from here Research • Publish Research on the Teacher Classroom Management Programme • Carry out combination RCT • Pilot Research in Infant Programme and Readiness for School
Where do we go from here – Advocacy and Policy Change • Develop the National IY Forum • Promote Parents Support Networks in each location • Document the benefits of IY through research • Work with key strategic agencies to influence national policy • Lobby policy makers
Conclusion • • Incredible Years gives us the opportunity of intervening early with children with SEBD The research gives us evidence of programme effectiveness Archways has the infrastructure to roll out the programme nationally Refocusing resources towards evidence based early intervention strategies makes sense for children, families and society as a whole
